Washington visit will deepen ties, says PM (18-06-2005) HA NOI — Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has told both The Washington Post and the Associated Press that his forthcoming visit to Washington is intended to deepen the bilateral relations between Viet Nam and the United States. There was great potential for them to develop ties in all fields despite past difficulties and present differences, he said. Khai is the first prime minister of a unified Viet Nam to visit the US and his journey will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Khoan was speaking at a function organised by the US embassy on the occasion of American Independence Day, July 4. Many of the US lawmakers backing PNTR are Viet Nam War veterans, said Vu Xuan Hong, who led a group of Vietnamese legislative leaders to the US during June 12-16 aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and co-operation between legislative organisations.
