Some shows have the power to change your sense of an artist for ever. This is one such momentous event. There have been many other close-focus shows – the black paintings, the private albums, The Disasters of War, Goya early or late – but this is the first to focus entirely on the portraits, and the effect is to draw Goya out of the darkness where he appears beyond reach, and even comprehension, in the prison house of his visions, and bring him into the broad sunlight with extraordinary directness – a man moving through life and society. That Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) was a portrait painter first to last is a truth often neglected but brilliantly restated at the National Gallery in a series of spectacular loans. Here is the liberal statesman Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, head in hand, weary at his midnight desk, prefiguring the famous figure in The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, the air thronged with evil critters issuing from his nightmares. Here is the … [Read more...] about Goya: The Portraits review – the artist in an extraordinary new light

Feature: Young woman in Gaza uses sand sculpture to highlight Palestinian cause
Video PlayerClose Sand Artist Rana Ramlawi works on her sand sculptures in Gaza City, Jan. 24, 2019. Rana Ramlawi, a 23-year-old Palestinian young woman from the Gaza Strip, resorts to sand art to highlight the Palestinian cause and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In her sculptures made out of sand and water, many messages are conveyed in support of the Palestinian cause, since she believes art is an important way to emphasize the rights and demand for freedom and ending the Israeli occupation. "One of my goals in my works is to keep this heritage and say that our identity, which Israel is trying to eradicate, is still there," she said. Are female artists worth collecting? Tate doesn’t seem to think so
The dire situation for equality in the British visual arts has been laid bare. We’ve reversed back into the Victorian age, where women can’t paint and women can’t write. My research suggests that female creatives are less likely to succeed now than they were in the 1990s. Today, when men’s artwork is signed, it goes up in value; conversely when work by women is signed, it goes down in value, and the addition of a woman’s signature can devalue artwork to the extent that female artists are more likely to leave their work unsigned. Hysteria, the female-specific Victorian malady, has returned to the UK, with women accused of being mad and out of control if they don’t conform to gallerists’ often unreasonable demands. Pulling greedily from the public purse, our great institutions are largely to blame. This summer, Tate has offered a lively programme of events to entice young people to delve into its collections and ensure the Department for Digital, … [Read more...] about Are female artists worth collecting? Sona Mohapatra objects to kids being shoved on to stage during concerts, says ‘making a young girl gyrate to Bedardi Raja is creepy’
Singer Sona Mohapatra has raised a concern about the prevailing trend of parents shoving their kids on to a stage while an artist is performing live. The singer posted a picture from one of her concerts along with a long note about why the practice is unsafe and disrespects the artist. She also pointed out that often the songs sung, and to which kids dance to, are not appropriate for them, given their age. She shared the picture and the note on Twitter with the caption, “While India outrages about how we treat women & more so when we are subjected to extreme acts, let’s take some time to think about how we treat our children, what we teach them & what environment they are growing up in.THIS happened for the nth time in one of my concert stages.”The picture shows a young girl standing besides her on stage while the live performance is still on. Sona wrote along with it, “Dear parents, do note that a concert stage is earned … [Read more...] about Sona Mohapatra objects to kids being shoved on to stage during concerts, says ‘making a young girl gyrate to Bedardi Raja is creepy’

Jenni Lomax to step down as director of Camden Arts Centre
Jenni Lomax is to step down after 26 years as director of Camden Arts Centre, having elevated it from a local artist-run space to an arts venue of international stature. Lomax, who was awarded an OBE in 2009, will step down in July 2017. During her time as director she oversaw a redevelopment of the building and gave an early break to major British artists such as Martin Creed, Mike Nelson and Simon Starling. She said recent milestones celebrated by the centre, including its 50th anniversary and a lucrative auction that helped bolster funds to support artist residencies, made her feel it was the right time to step aside. The search for her successor will begin early next year. “I never intended to stay 25 years,” Lomax said. “When I started, the organisation was completely at a crossroads: it had lost half of its funding from Camden council and it was a great period of change and great challenge. I feel very proud of where we are now and all we have achieved since … [Read more...] about Jenni Lomax to step down as director of Camden Arts Centre
