After the selfies and hugs and goodbyes, we say these six words: Text me when you get home. We don’t save this send-off for special occasions. There’s no time limit. It could be a Sunday brunch, a Saturday late night, a book club meeting, or a yoga workout. It always ends the same. Text me when you get home. Jassy Correia will never be home again. After celebrating her 23rd birthday with friends at Venu nightclub in Boston’s Theatre District into the earliest hours of Feb. 24. Minutes after leaving the club, Louis D. Coleman III walked up to her, they chatted, and left together. On Thursday, her body was found in the trunk of his car when he was pulled over driving through Delaware. In the week or so since Jassy went missing, I’ve seen the same tweets, memes, Groupme messages and texts over and over. Where were her friends? Never leave your friends alone. Why did they let her leave with a guy? The Girl Code is we arrive together, we leave together. … [Read more...] about Women often part with the words: ‘Text me when you get home.’ We shouldn’t have to. But we do

Republican Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania reportedly got a woman pregnant and urged her to get an abortion, text messages unearthed Tuesday suggest. Murphy, who is pro-life, admitted last month to having an affair with psychologist Shannon Edwards. Text messages obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette show Edwards berating the representative for posting pro-life statements on his official Facebook page when he allegedly urged her to get an abortion during a prior pregnancy scare. A text message from Jan. 25 reads, “And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options.” Murphy reportedly replied, “I get what you say about my March for life messages. I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.” Murphy, a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus, has long … [Read more...] about Report: Rep. Tim Murphy Impregnated Mistress, Urged Abortion In Texts
CNN Opinion columnist John D. Sutter is reporting on a tiny number -- 2 degrees -- that may have a huge effect on the future. You can subscribe to the "2 degrees" newsletter or follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. He's jdsutter on Snapchat. You can shape this coverage. Le Bourget, France (CNN)If you've looked at this website much in 2015, you've probably noticed I've been writing something over and over and over: 2 degrees Celsius is the danger zone for global warming. Crossing that temperature threshold has all sorts of consequences, for the natural world and people. Low-lying Pacific nations, like Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, likely will be uninhabitable at that level of warming, which is measured as the average temperature increase since the industrial revolution. Storms and heatwaves will get more dangerous. Droughts will become supercharged. Animals will be at risk for extinction, and so on. That one little number is at the heart of the COP21 U.N. climate … [Read more...] about Is 2 degrees the wrong climate goal?
Here is the full text of Gov. Phil Murphy's 2019 state of the state address as prepared: Lieutenant Governor Oliver, Senate President Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Coughlin, Majority Leaders Weinberg and Greenwald, Minority Leaders Kean and Bramnick, members of the Legislature, Chief Justice Rabner and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, former governors Florio, McGreevey, and Codey, distinguished faith leaders, honored guests, and fellow New Jerseyans. I had planned to give a very different speech today but, after reading the audit of New Jersey’s corporate tax incentives released last week, this is not a time for business as usual. One year ago, tomorrow, I took the oath of office as New Jersey’s 56th governor. Three days later, on January 19, 2018, I ordered a full and complete audit by State Comptroller Degnan of our tax incentive programs -- it was one of my highest priorities. My concern was that … [Read more...] about Full text of Phil Murphy’s 2019 State of the State Address
In the David versus Goliath matchup that was the Hamlin-Wellington playoff game Friday, I guess I shouldn't be that surprised. David did win his battle, after all. As did the Pied Pipers, who sent the Texas high school football world into a frenzy after taking down No. 2 Wellington 21-18. Hamlin used an all-worldly defensive performance to slay Goliath, a Skyrockets team that entered the contest 12-0, outscoring opponents 610-84. Not many gave Hamlin much of a chance. That didn't matter to the Pied Pipers. "We believed it could happen," Hamlin coach Russell Lucas said. "We had to convince our kids that it could happen. I just felt like we had a great week of practice, and our kids were just very confident. They knew (Wellington) was good, but they feel like we've got a good team." Wellington came into the night averaging 50.8 points per game. The Pied Pipers thwarted the Skyrockets attack with four turnovers, one that provided a massive momentum swing. Hamlin scored on the game's … [Read more...] about Big Country Notebook: Hamlin sends shockwaves throughout state with upset of Wellington
