STUDENTS are being banned from having mobile phones in schools across France - including at break time. The strict new law will state that kids under the age of 15 won't be allowed to touch their smartphones until the school bell has rang at the end of the day. This new rule also goes for tablets and smart watches and has been called a "public health message to families" by French government. The rule was passed in July after French president Emmanuel Macron included it in his election campaign last year.It will affect secondary and junior schools across the country from when kids return from summer holidays in August 5. Jean-Michel Blanquer, the French education minister said: "It's good that children are not too often, or even at all, in front of a screen before the age of seven." If schools wish to step it up a notch, they can enforce the rule on kids over 15 too. Nick Gibb said he had concerns about the impact excessive phone use was having on children, and said the government would introduce lessons for pupils on how to limit their screen time. “Schools obviously are free to set their own behaviour policies but my own view is that schools should ban mobile telephones and smartphones inside school, and particularly inside classrooms,” he told The Times. “I believe very strongly that children should be limiting their own use at home. Every hour spent online and on a smartphone is an hour less talking to family, and it’s an hour less exercise and it’s an hour less sleep. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.
