(Column) 1 / 1 Back to Gallery Like more or less everyone I know, I have no desire to see a single entertainment company take over the future, dominating what had been a movie industry of multiple entities, each one fighting for their slice of your attention span. Disney, the movie studio so powerful that it ate another movie studio, looks, to many, like it could be that company. The full impact of its absorption of 20th Century Fox has yet to be felt, but now that the smoke has cleared, the mega-corporation that was formed stands before us like an unprecedented colossus, looming over all other … [Read more...] about Why Is Everyone So Scared of Disney? What happened Shares of Dedham, Mass.-based electric power provider Atlantic Power (NYSE: AT) plunged 11.5% to close at $2.31 per share in Wednesday trading -- apparently for no good reason. Continue Reading Below The only news that emerged today was of the positive variety: A Form 4 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed that Atlantic's executive vice president of commercial development bought two batches of 10,000 shares each of Atlantic Power stock (an "insider purchase") for prices of $2.35 per share and $2.38 per share, respectively. Both prices were above where Atlantic Power stock ended the day. So what That sounds like positive news -- an executive putting his own money on the line to expand his investment in the stock. And yesterday's news was no worse: A press release announced an upcoming sale, in May 2022, of Atlantic's Manchief power plant to a current customer for $45.2 million. As Atlantic Power explained in the release, it will continue operating … [Read more...] about Why Did Atlantic Power Stock Drop 11.5%?
Miroslava Duma. Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Congratulations to whoever had “influencer makes appearance” on their Mueller report bingo card. Russian mega fashion influencer Miroslava Duma showed up in the 400-page report as someone who passed an invite from the deputy prime minister of Russia to the Trumps. Reporter Kim Bhasin caught the mention and posted the finding on Twitter: In December 2015, Duma gave then-candidate Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump the invitation to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, courtesy of the deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation. The forum was started by Putin, and Duma has been a speaker there twice. Sadly for Duma, the Trumps declined the invitation. How did an influencer end up in the middle of the deputy prime minister and the Trumps? Duma and Ivanka are at least acquaintances – a smear campaign against Duma that circulated during New York fashion week included a photo of Duma and Ivanka together, … [Read more...] about Why Is a Russian Fashion Influencer in the Mueller Report?
It may be hard to believe now, but for a New York minute it seemed that Bill de Blasio was going to be the champion of an insurgent left. Progressive activists and commentators hailed de Blasio’s landslide victory in New York’s 2013 mayoral election as a sign of an encouraging new direction for the Democratic Party. His unabashedly liberal campaign—which centered on income inequality, or what de Blasio poetically termed a “tale of two cities”—prefigured the unrest that would shake the party, culminating in Bernie Sanders’s unlikely challenge to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential primary. De Blasio’s 2013 platform, which The New York Times called “the meatiest material presented by any candidate” in the field, sounded themes that are now standard fare for Democrats with national ambitions. He promised a universal pre-kindergarten program, paid for by a tax on the wealthy; an identification card that would allow … [Read more...] about Why Is Bill de Blasio’s Presidential Dream a Sad Joke?
Mayor Rogero is withholding $75,000 in city funds for Legacy Parks voted by City Council in its annual budget ordinance in June. Legacy Parks is mystified by Rogero's action, which is unprecedented. Legacy Parks promotes parks and greenways. Legacy Parks had former county mayor Tommy Schumpert and former UT trustee and prominent businesswoman Sharon Pryse meet recently with Rogero. They failed to solve the impasse. Rogero also did not tell them precisely what it would take for her to authorize release of the funds, which Council unanimously adopted. This money is a significant part of their budget. Rogero also had a one-on-one meeting with Carol Evans, executive director of Legacy Parks, but it, too, did not resolve the impasse. Rogero has also not told City Council of her action to delay or cancel the implementation of council's vote. One council member, Marshall Stair, serves on the Legacy Parks board but has not yet taken a stand on the issue. One … [Read more...] about Victor Ashe: Why is Mayor Rogero withholding $75,000 from Legacy Parks?
