Ben: As Ed detailed in a post yesterday, Kamala Harris still isn’t gaining much traction among black voters in the Democratic primary, coming in at below 10 percent in two recent national polls. Joe Biden continues to dominate among this group, but Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have recently both polled ahead of Harris, too. Harris’s showing stands in contrast to Barack Obama, who by this this point in 2007 was already posting impressive numbers in South Carolina, among other places, on his way to a decisive victory. Why do you think Harris is having so much trouble? Ed: I’d offer three quick reasons: (1) History has already been made with Obama, so there’s less perceived need for African-Americans to unite behind a black candidate; (2) Obama was a world-historical figure by the time he announced in 2007; Harris is mostly known as a cleverly tactical pol; and (3) the Electability Terror of 2020. Zak: I think Ed’s No. 3 is my best guess. Black voters … [Read more...] about Why Is Kamala Harris Struggling With Black Voters So Much?

Kamala Harris seemed to be gaining momentum after the most recent Democratic Party presidential debate, but there is one person who just told the entire country he does not think she has what it takes to beat Donald Trump: her ex-lover. Ouch. In a column for the San Francisco Chronicle, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown dismissed Harris quickly. Brown has been vocal about his previous relationship with Harris and has not held back on commenting about her joining the 2020 race. Shortly after Harris announced her campaign, Brown wrote an op-ed in which he spoke candidly about their past. "Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker," he wrote. "And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco. I have also helped the careers of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and a host of other politicians." Brown added … [Read more...] about Former Mayor Who Dated Kamala Harris Says She Can’t Beat Trump
video Kamala Harris: I have a great deal of respect for Joe Biden, but this is one issue in which we disagree Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on the Trump administration and campaigning against former Vice President Joe Biden. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., has one of the highest incomes of the 2020 presidential hopefuls. Continue Reading Below Like several of the other candidates, Harris released her tax returns back in April. She even took it a step further by publicizing her last 15 years of returns. Harris reported an income of about $157,000 in 2018 from her job as a senator, as well as more than $320,000 in net income as a writer. Harris had two books published at the beginning of 2019 -- “The Truths We Hold” and a children’s book called “Superheros are Everywhere.” Her husband, Doug Emhoff, earned about $1.5 million working as an attorney, according to their released tax returns. The documents also showed she and … [Read more...] about What is Kamala Harris’ net worth?
A bad idea is running amok in the Democratic primary — the conversation on “electability.” Thanks to the disappointing 2016 presidential election results, electability for many strategists can now be interpreted simply as “the white male candidate who is best suited to defeat Trump.”That’s precisely the wrong way of looking at things, and it’s based on the mistaken belief that the path to victory in 2020 only requires winning back Trump supporters. It misses the much larger issue at hand: Democrats simply won’t stand a chance in 2020 if we can’t energize African American voters. The truth is, too many voters who supported President Obama in 2008 and 2012 made a choice to stay home in 2016. In Wayne County, Michigan – home of Detroit, where Kamala Harris gave a speech addressing the “electability” conversation on Sunday – 37,000 fewer voters turned out in 2016 than 2012. The county is 40% black. Given that … [Read more...] about Opinion: The Real Electable Democrat Is Kamala Harris
Washington – Kamala Harris, a first-term senator and former California attorney general known for her rigorous questioning of President Donald Trump’s nominees, entered the Democratic presidential race on Monday. Vowing to “bring our voices together,” Harris would be the first woman to hold the presidency and the second African-American if she succeeds. Harris, who grew up in Oakland, California, and is a daughter of parents from Jamaica and India, is one of the earliest high-profile Democrats to join what is expected to be a crowded field. She made her long anticipated announcement on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “I am running for president of the United States,” she said. “And I’m very excited about it.” The 54-year old portrayed herself as a fighter for justice, decency and equality in a video distributed by her campaign as she announced her bid. “They’re the values we as Americans cherish, and … [Read more...] about Kamala Harris announces 2020 presidential bid
