The New Orleans Saints offense will undergo a critcal transition this offseason as it looks to replace center Max Unger.Unger, who joined the Saints in 2015, started 63 of a possible 64 games during his time in New Orleans. During that stretch, Drew Brees was the starting quarterback for 61 games, which means Unger played more games with Brees than any other center in the 40-year-old quarterback’s career. Now, the Saints will look for a new player to bolster the middle of an offensive line that had been among the best in the NFL the past two seasons.“Obviously, Max was a tremendous leader and a guy that you don’t just snap your fingers and replace,” Brees said. 4 Saints absent from Thursday’s OTAs; Cameron Meredith still working with trainer Cameron Jordan and Larry Warford were among the players not at practice Thursday. The top candidates to be the new starting center are Erik McCoy, Nick Easton, Cameron Tom and Will Clapp. At organized team … [Read more...] about Drew Brees trying to find rhythm with Saints’ center candidates

BATON ROUGE – Rare is it when an NFL head coach can go to a Starbucks, go to a Subway, board a plane in a major airport, land in another airport and return home without being Tweeted, Facebooked, Instagrammed, Pinterested, Tumblred (They still have that one?), scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced, peppered, capped and topped (The last two are not the same thing at Waffle House.). But Saints coach Sean Payton did just that last Monday when he went up to Fort Collins, Colorado, and worked out Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson. “It just so happened that there was nothing on our workout with him,” Payton said Friday night after drafting the 6-foot-2, 215-pound quarterback with the 11th pick of the third round and 75th overall. “And that was not a stealth move on our part. No, don’t give me that much credit. It just happened to not be out there. There was nothing written about it.” And Payton and his staff are voracious readers, social … [Read more...] about Have the Saints found the next Drew Brees?
NEW ORLEANS — This New Orleans Saints season is clearly not for the birds. Four days after the Eagles were landed, 48-7, right here, the Saints shot down the Atlanta Falcons, 31-17, on the first Turkey Night home game in Saints history in front of 73,017 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to improve to 10-1 on the season. And the Saints did not even need that much from quarterback Drew Brees, who threw for his second lowest yardage total of the season at 171, as New Orleans rushed for 150 yards. And its defense put up a season high for sacks with six of quarterback Matt Ryan, including two by end Cam Jordan, and recovered three fumbles in the red zone along with an interception for a season-high four takeaways. "A day where he throws for under 200 yards is usually one on the other side that you sign up for," Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. But Brees did manage to complete 15 of 22 and toss four touchdown passes, all to greenish, non-drafted free … [Read more...] about No Fly Zone: Falcons fall to Saints, 31-17, as ‘Drew Brees Passing Camp’ finds 4 newbies
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – For Tom Rees, the template was obvious. The hard part was getting Ian Book to share his vision and recognize his own potential. That’s why Rees, Notre Dame’s former starting quarterback (2010-13) and current quarterbacks coach, pulled the young backup aside during August training camp and sat him down for a heart to heart. “I challenged him: ‘Hey, what’s holding you back?’ “ Rees said. “Before the season, I told him, ‘Tell me why you can’t be Drew Brees? You don’t miss. You’re athletic. Why can’t you be Drew Brees?’ “ Book, a redshirt sophomore from El Dorado Hills, Calif., about 30 minutes east of Sacramento, has miles to go to match the accomplishments of Brees, record-breaking passer and Super Bowl-winning leader of the New Orleans Saints.
