Dương Văn Thành, director of the co-operative, said productivity had increased from 3.8 tonnes per hectare on average in the 2016 summer-autumn rice crop to 6.1 tonnes per hectare in the 2017-18 winter-spring crop. “Productivity has gradually gone up and so has the profit surged. Trade between Viet Nam and South Korea, one of its biggest economic partners, was set to reach US$20 billion in 2015, about double the current figure, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in a meeting with his Korean counterpart Kim Hwang-sik in Seoul yesterday. Two-way trade is expected to reach $11 billion this year, a 16 per cent increase against last year. Authorities collected VNĐ7.9 trillion (US$347.5 million) from administrative fines, selling off confiscated smuggled goods, and tax arrears, 40 per cent more than the previous year’s first half. According to National Steering Committee 389, the majority of smuggled goods fall into categories of essential consumer goods, heavily taxed goods, or goods banned for import, such as cocaine, explosives, tobacco, cosmetics, petrol and gas, elephant tusks or rhino horns, among others.
