Around 20,000 volunteers are taking part in the annual “Tiếp Sức Mùa Thi” (Assistance during Exam Season) Programme in HCM City. — VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam News HCM CITY — Provinces nationwide are offering assistance to students during the three-day national high school examination which kicks off today. In HCM City alone, more than 20,000 volunteers are are taking part in the city’s annual “Tiếp Sức Mùa Thi” (Assistance during Exam Season) Programme. HCM City has 78,000 students registered for the examination. The city’s Tiếp Sức Mùa Thi programme is organised by the Việt Nam Student Association’s HCM City chapter and the HCM City Student Assistance Centre, with support from government agencies. The volunteers have received training to offer assistance to candidates and their relatives. The city has provided VNĐ200 million ($8,700) to support disadvantaged students in the city and other provinces across the country. According to a report of the Ministry of Education and Training, 26 candidates were suspended during the two-hour literature test for violating exam regulations. Weather in most of the provinces and cities remained pleasant and smooth traffic helped the students reach the exam hall in time. However, some mountainous provinces witnessed heavy rain, which caused landslides, flash floods and traffic congestion on some roads. This prevented some students from Lai Châu and Hà Giang from reaching exam halls. Like most students in Việt Nam, Khoa felt huge pressure when he took the entrance exams for public high school, which is the favoured place to study. This year in HCM City, nearly 70 per cent of 86,881 secondary school students who took the exam passed and entered public high schools. Schools in Phú Yên suffer from poor infrastructure

Cao Văn Sự, head of the Planning and Finance Division under the department, said in the past few months, the department had inspected the infrastructure of schools in the province and concluded that degraded infrastructure in three high schools should be fixed urgently. So far, the department has given the schools some VNĐ3.5 billion (US$154,000) to fix minor problems. The department, together with the schools, plans to ask for more funds from the provincial People’s Committee to improve school infrastructure. Three 12th graders were hospitalised on Tuesday noon after being hit by a 1.2sq.m plaster piece that fell from the ceiling of the teacher’s meeting room. Students had be en moved to study in this room as their classroom was dilapidated . The students are stable now and out of hospital. The two selected safe locations are Đoàn Kết-Hai Bà Trưng High school , and continuing education and vocation al training centre in Hai Bà Trưng District. Kindergartens need the highest number, followed by primary- and secondary-level English classes. For instance, Long Thạnh Mỹ Kindergarten in District 9 and Hướng Dương Kindergarten in Tân Phú District each need 16 new teachers. Phước Thạnh Kindergarten in Củ Chi District needs 15.
