If uber-talented actress Emily Blunt ever wrote a book about her 2018, she might bend a famous Dickens title and call it "A Tale of Two Bathtubs." Blunt, on hand at the Parker Palm Springs hotel on Friday morning to receive the Variety Creative Impact Acting Award at the fabled entertainment magazine's annual awards brunch, explained that in both of her hit 2018 films, bathtubs played major roles. "I have to say that this year with 'Mary Poppins Returns' and 'The Quiet Place,' it's sort of been emblematic of some sort of dream for me with the Jekyll and Hyde-ness of the two projects," she said during her acceptance speech. "The joy I felt playing this fantastical nanny bringing back child-like wonder and turning even a bathtub into something extraordinary, and the joy I felt hearing the dread-inducing screams of people watching me give birth in a bathtub. It's sort of a running theme. I really wanted it to be a year of bathtubs ... but both equally joyous … [Read more...] about Emily Blunt made a (bathtub) splash in 2018, honored alongside Ryan Coogler, Troye Sivan

Often, when actors or directors with Oscar contenders sit down opposite your Carpetbagger, I can sense the barely concealed anxiety underneath their brave faces. There are so many year-end movies jostling for award-season attention, and it’s possible that their passion projects could get lost in the scrum. It was striking, then, when I recently met up with a relaxed and grinning John Krasinski, who’s treating the awards run of “A Quiet Place” as an unexpected victory lap. Krasinski directed and starred in the postapocalyptic horror movie about a family besieged by sound-seeking monsters, and since “A Quiet Place” was an out-of-the-gate hit last spring, “it’s nice to have the pressure off and have this be a celebration than for it to be an angsty, scary time,” Krasinski said. [Read our review of “A Quiet Place.” ] In a year with many populist contenders in the mix, including “A Star is Born” and … [Read more...] about ‘A Quiet Place’ Was a Huge Hit. Will Oscar Listen?
Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh had such a good time as presenters at September's Emmy ceremony that they’re taking on an entire awards show: The duo is co-hosting NBC’s "76th Golden Globe Awards" (Sunday, 8 EST/5 PST). When they appeared together as presenters at the Emmy Awards last September, Oh departed from the usual patter, dramatically ripping the winner envelope in two before announcing “La La Land” and then a high-school boyfriend as the winners. (An amusingly horrified Samberg reassembled it to announce "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino as the Emmy winner.) The audience loved it, and so did Samberg and Oh. “We had so much fun together. That was a great pre-experience to this,” Samberg says during a shooting break for NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” which moves to NBC Jan. 10 and could get a boost from his Globes appearance. When the opportunity arose, “That made us sort of look at … [Read more...] about Andy Samberg on Golden Globes hosting stint: ‘We’ve got to write some ‘Star is Born’ jokes, stat!’

New York – “A Star Is Born” led nominations for the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards with four nods including best ensemble on Wednesday, firmly establishing Bradley Cooper’s romantic revival as this year’s Academy Awards front runner. In nominations announced Wednesday morning in West Hollywood, Calif., the actors guild – on of the most predictive bellwethers of the Oscars – threw cold water on the awards campaigns of numerous contenders while elevating others. But “A Star Is Born” fared the best of all, landing nominations for Cooper (best male actor), Lady Gaga (best female actor) and Sam Elliott (best supporting male actor). The other nominees for the group’s top award, best ensemble, were: “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” That category is the most closely watched of the SAG Awards because only once in the last decades has the … [Read more...] about ‘A Star Is Born’ tops SAG Awards nominations, snubs abound
