Golden Globes 2020 SNUBS: Cats, Game Of Thrones, This Is Us, Little Women, Robert De Niro, Adam Sandler are left out in the cold
The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday morning. And while Marriage Story, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood all did very well, there were several projects left off the list, which often serves as a precursor to the Academy Awards. Cats, starring Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift, did not get a lot of GG love, though one of Swift's songs for the film - Beautiful Ghosts - was recognized. Games Of Thrones was also not listed. Greta Gerwig’s retelling of Little Women, was not recognized but star Saoirse Ronan, however. did land a nod. And Adam Sandler was left out for his acclaimed dramatic performance in Uncut Gems. No thanks: The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday morning and Games Of Thrones did not do well; seen here is Emilia Clarke Not meowing: Cats, starring Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift, did not get a lot of GG love, though one of Swift's songs for the film - Beautiful Ghosts - was … [Read more...] about Golden Globes 2020 SNUBS: Cats, Game Of Thrones, This Is Us, Little Women, Robert De Niro, Adam Sandler are left out in the cold
Was a Heartfelt, Cathartic, and Unexpectedly Hopeful Show
Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies. Photo: HBO Big Little Lies, which ended last night, was set among the sort of people who have swimming pools built on the edges of cliffs. But the longer the drama went on, the more incidental the lush trappings seemed. By the finale, the stakes were as simple as could be: The show’s leading women — Laura Dern’s Renata, Reese Witherspoon’s Madeline, Nicole Kidman’s Celeste, and Shailene Woodley’s Jane — surrounded a raging abuser (Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry), engaged him in primordial combat, and took him down with a last-minute assist from Zoë Kravitz’s Bonnie, who sized up the threat by watching Celeste and Perry’s body language during Trivia Night (quite a name for a momentous evening). This was the grand climax the show had been building toward. It resonated so deeply that it rendered moot any complaints I might have had about the execution of certain scenes or subplots here … [Read more...] about Was a Heartfelt, Cathartic, and Unexpectedly Hopeful Show
Ponders What Makes a Man
This article contains spoilers through Season 2, Episode 1 of Big Little Lies. The women of Big Little Lies spend their lives picking up the pieces men leave behind. In its first season, which was initially conceptualized as a stand-alone adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel, the HBO series earned both critical acclaim and a touch of gendered condescension as it introduced viewers to five women navigating murder and myopia in Monterey: Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz). The season ended with the death of Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), Celeste’s abusive husband, who attacked her at a themed fundraiser held at their children’s elementary school—and mysteriously fell down the stairs leading up to the seaside campus.which aired Sunday, finds some of the women reeling after Perry’s passing. Bonnie, who ultimately pushed him to his death while he was attacking Celeste, … [Read more...] about Ponders What Makes a Man
The Golden Globes Red-Carpet Coverage Changes, But Only a Little
Viola Davis on the Golden Globes red carpet. Photo: 2018 Trae Patton/NBC The red-carpet Golden Globe shows were the television equivalent of a stylish friend who has suddenly developed a social conscience. The pre-game programming on both E! and NBC looked pretty much the same as it always does. Lots of famous people showed up in fancy gowns and allowed Ryan Seacrest, Giuliana Rancic, Natalie Morales, and Al Roker to shove microphones in their faces. But in keeping with the spirit of the Time’s Up movement, an effort spearheaded by Hollywood women seeking to address sexual assault and the need for gender parity in the industry and beyond, the words coming out of their mouths were more issue-driven. “We’re not asking who are you wearing,” Rancic explained at the beginning of E! Live From the Red Carpet, alluding to the fact that many of the actors and actresses were dressed in black to show Time’s Up solidarity. “We’re asking why are you … [Read more...] about The Golden Globes Red-Carpet Coverage Changes, But Only a Little
Power Rankings: This Mite Hurt a Little
Photo: HBO Are the Roys ever in New York City these days? Last week they were in London, the week before they were at Argestes. This week finds the family traveling back to Logan’s childhood home: Welcome to Dundee, a place that, as Logan mentions in passing to Marcia, used to have much better tap water. The Roys are here to throw Logan a surprise party honoring a piece of plastic that Marcia — quite rightly — calls a gravestone. The kids are squabbling over Rhea, Rhea is cozying up to Logan, and Logan is being kept in the dark about the latest shitshow at the fuck factory (everything that went on in cruises). Perhaps the Dundees should’ve remained a plastic award given to the staff of a small paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. (Roman’s girlfriend, Tabitha — quickly becoming my favorite character — is unranked this week, but can she please stomp in Logan’s office and win it all?) Here’s where we stand after … [Read more...] about Power Rankings: This Mite Hurt a Little
