Having had skin cancer twice — once on her arm as a teenager and another on her back, four decades later — Lavinia Newlands was understandably nervous when, two years ago, she developed a raised brown patch just above her lip. There was also a smaller rough patch under her right eye (which she could feel but was difficult to see in the mirror). They’d slowly emerged over months. Neither looked like the skin cancers she’d had before: these had been basal cell carcinomas (BCC), which typically form red, scaly patches that can ulcerate and scab. But Lavinia, 62, was concerned, and feared more bad news — not least because she’d often had sunburn as a child. ‘I grew up in a generation who didn’t know about sunscreens,’ she says. ‘I spent summers on British bucket-and-spade holidays, running around all day outside without any form of sun protection. I remember peeling off my swimming costume and howling as my skin was so sore from … [Read more...] about Is this proof the NHS wonder cream can reverse sun damage?
What sun cream helps you tan
June’s arrival means a few things for my beauty routine: higher SPF, of course, and packing on the bronzer. During winter months, bronzer acts as a sort of magic trick to convince people that you aren’t pasty white, though you are. In early summer, it helps enhance your glow to give your skin a sun-kissed (but not Jersey Shore–level) sheen. Having said all of that, it’s shockingly easy to go wrong with bronzer: In seconds, your skin can become orange or a shade (or three) darker than your natural skin tone. In high school, I veered dangerously between golden and flat-out orange, one too many times. Almost a decade’s worth of bronzer use later, I feel confident enough in my skills to pass on some lessons. First and foremost, if you’re new to bronzer, figure out whether you’re a cream or powder person. One quick way to find out: If you have dry skin, and haven’t had much bronzer experience, I recommend cream; if you’re oily, go … [Read more...] about The 5 Bronzers That Make Me Look Like a Tan Goddess

Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. 1. A bad tasting nail polish to stop you from gnawing at your finger nails like you're taking a middle school math test. Not only is biting your nails aesthetically unappealing, but it's unsanitary because of all the germs being transferred from your fingers to your mouth. 2. A dry shampoo made with rice starch so you can skip some hair washes this year, but still have beautiful (and clean-looking) hair. Washing your hair too often can strip it of natural oils, which in turn makes your scalp produce MORE oil. 3. A pack of Mighty Patch pimple patches, because you are not Dr. Pimple Popper! These lil' guys will keep you from popping your pimples by putting a barrier between them and your dirty hands. Plus, they do all the work for you by … [Read more...] about 23 Beauty Products That’ll Help You Kiss Your Bad Habits Goodbye
Downtown Chandler's slow and steady growth has paid off with storefronts filled with a wide variety of restaurants and more on the way. Downtown Chandler seems to be full of contradictions: Old and new. Traditional and modern. Family-friendly and late-night. So it's not surprising that the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership adopted a slogan last year that sounds like another contradiction: “Hip and Historic.” You'll see downtown businesses use that description again and again in their marketing and on websites. The charming downtown district has recently become a hotbed of activity, particularly in the dining world. A diverse array of restaurants and bars fill the storefronts, offering options for beer lovers to health nuts to big families. A slew of anticipated restaurant projects stand to elevate the alluring vibe. But it wasn't always that way. Jack Monnissen, 57, has lived in Chandler for two years and is a regular at Peixoto Coffee. Originally from Belgium, he … [Read more...] about ‘Let’s go downtown’: How Chandler’s restaurant, bar scene helped transform city
After a dubious start to spring, with a snow storm on its inaugural day, the weather has finally begun to warm up. Before long we’ll be seeing the beginning of the regular weekend rush to the Shore. But with pool and beach season approaching, another subtle change will occur – pharmacies will be stocking their shelves with myriad types of sunscreen. Why has sunscreen become so important? With the increase in life expectancy, improved quality of life and time for outdoor fun, as well as the unfortunate popularity of indoor tanning, the U.S. is undergoing an epidemic of skin cancer.
