Telecom monopoly hurts apartment residents

July 21, 2018 by vietnamnews.vn

Tenants of many apartment buildings in Hà Nội could only use one telecom service provider selected by the building management board for internet or cable television. — Photo tienphong.vn Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Watching cable television and accessing the internet are now basic needs for the majority of households in Việt Nam, but in many apartment buildings in big cities like Hà Nội and HCM City, residents are unable to freely choose their telecom and internet service provider. The reason for this is that building developers are partnering with one cable TV and internet provider. This prevents apartment residents from choosing providers other than those selected by building owners, Tuổi Trẻ (Youth) newspaper reported. Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly

February 14, 2019 by english.thesaigontimes.vn

Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly By Le Anh An aerial view of the downtown area of HCMC - PHOTO: THANH HOA HCMC - The HCMC government’s decision to stop licensing new multistorey apartment building projects in Districts 1 and 3 until 2020 could result in a monopoly among the few investors in projects currently under construction, paving the way for them to raise the prices of apartments, according to the HCMC Real Estate Association (HoREA). HCMC currently has more than 8,500 high-end apartments, accounting for 30% of the total, while low-cost ones make up only 24.7%, with nearly 7,000 units. This means that there is an imbalance in HCMC’s housing market. A balanced housing market should have the largest proportion of low-end apartments and the smallest proportion of apartments in the high-end segment. HoREA forecast a shortage of homes for low-income people but an abundant supply of high-end apartments. Investors in luxury apartments will have to … [Read more...] about Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly

Ngo Quang Xuan, Dong Thap Province, said Viet Nam may well have won international acclaim for the gains it had made since joining the World Trade Organisation in late 2006. But the country now faced numerous challenges, especially in dealing with its weaknesses. "National Assembly Committees have increased their supervisory activity but I’m afraid to say their inspections have not been very effective" he said.
