Scandal Get Out of Jail, Free Season 5 Episode 6 Editor’s Rating 5 stars ***** «Previous Next» Photo: Nicole Wilder/ABC #Gladiators, throughout these five seasons of Scandal, I haven’t been Mellie’s biggest fan, but I have been sympathetic to her. Her life has basically been like Marley & Me, if the whole movie was just the last five minutes [SPOILER ALERT] where the dog dies. I mean, one of Mellie’s sons was murdered, her husband cheated on her for years with multiple women, she thought she had a second shot at love with Andrew, but then he turned out to be a monster, she’s been sexually assaulted by her father-in-law, and she gave up her career so she could focus on Fitz becoming president. She has clearly been through a lot and is still standing, much to the annoyance of Fitz. And while she has given her fair share of speeches (this is a Shondaland production, after all), she seems to always be the one who ended up with … [Read more...] about Recap: Olivia & Fitz’s Wedding Day!

Is Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Movie About This Famous Fashion Designer?
Update, September 8: Today, Universal and Focus Features picked up the rights to Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis’s film, which is still untitled, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Production is planned to start next year with a $35 million budget in time for a late 2017 release. Our original post appears below. The June 2 announcement that director Paul Thomas Anderson would be reuniting with Daniel Day-Lewis for his next film had the industry buzzing: Day-Lewis has not made a film since 2012’s Lincoln, and his return to the screen could hardly come under better auspices, since he won an Oscar for his terrifying, iconic work as oil baron Daniel Plainview in Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. But fans of Anderson have little to go on when it comes to the new project’s log line. Unlike Anderson’s last movie, Inherent Vice, which was adapted from a well-known Thomas Pynchon novel, his latest film has no name and its plot remains … [Read more...] about Is Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Movie About This Famous Fashion Designer?
Nelson’s Column: Is it time for the Labour Party to return to the centre-left?
If politicians were to face jail for lying Boris Johnson would be serving an indeterminate term. He’s a serial killer of the truth. But voters have instead sentenced him to five years of more lies from behind the wrought-iron gate bars of No10. So I don’t expect this PM to introduce the law proposed by Compassion in Politics and Welsh Nat leader Adam Price to punish political porkies with an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison. The pressure group is supported by more than 50 past and present MPs and such diverse figures as historian Alice Roberts and comic Ruby Wax. It’s director, former ITN Home Affairs editor Jennifer Nadel, says: “This has been the most divisive, deceitful, and disrespectful election campaign in living memory.” Hasn’t it just? Johnson’s promised 40 new hospitals don’t exist in anything other than his imagination while 18,500 of his 50,000 new nurses do. So the bigger figure was a big fib. The PM’s claims … [Read more...] about Nelson’s Column: Is it time for the Labour Party to return to the centre-left?
From council house to superyachts, how Britain’s richest man Jim Ratcliffe amassed a £21 BILLION fortune
HE is Britain’s richest man after his wealth increased by an astonishing £42million a DAY last year to £21billion. Twice as wealthy as Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and inventor James Dyson, he is the 29th richest person on the planet. But few will have heard of Jim Ratcliffe, the 65-year-old grandad who has become the first British-born businessman to top the Sunday Times Rich List. Brought up on a council estate near Manchester, he was sacked from his first job after just three days. He belatedly went into business for himself aged 40 and founded his giant petrochemical firm Ineos just 20 years ago. Ineos is not a household name but you are sure to have bought products that use its chemicals — the plastic cap on your toothpaste, perhaps, the chlorine in your tap water, fuel in your car or supermarket packaging. The company with a £45billion-a-year turnover employs 18,500 people globally, sells 60million tons of chemicals a year — and Jim owns more … [Read more...] about From council house to superyachts, how Britain’s richest man Jim Ratcliffe amassed a £21 BILLION fortune

Bob Hawke's widow Blanche d'Alpuget (pictured) has broken her silence over Rosslyn Dillon's recent allegations Bob Hawke's widow Blanche d'Alpuget says she knew 'didn't know anything' about bombshell claims the former prime minister told his daughter not to report an alleged rape until they came to light this month. Rosslyn Dillon alleged in an affidavit she was raped by Labor MP Bill Landeryou in the 1980s and Mr Hawke covered it up to protect his career. Neither man can defend the allegations, with the former prime minister dying on May 16 this year, just three months after the passing of his former colleague. 'I didn't know anything, and I can't say anything,' Ms d'Alpuge said at the launch for her revised book 'Bob Hawke: The Complete Biography' in Sydney's north shore on Sunday, The Australian reported. 'I don't know what she said.' The 75-year-old added that she had been advised by her lawyers not to comment. She also referred to her legal advice when … [Read more...] about ‘I really feel for her’: Bob Hawke’s widow Blanche d’Alpuget breaks her silence over bombshell claims the larrikin former PM told his daughter not to report an alleged rape
Doing the crossword and smoking a cigar on his balcony: Bob Hawke’s last home photo with his beloved wife Blanche shows how the ‘great Australian’ smiled until the end
Doing a crossword and smoking a cigar, Bob Hawke's final photo at home with his beloved wife Blanche d'Alpuget shows how he smiled until the very end. The larrikin prime minister, who drank and smoked throughout his life, enjoyed a few puffs while sitting in his favourite chair by a heater on the balcony of his north Sydney home. The picture was taken on March 28 by the couple's female neighbour who often waved at the pair before they would smile and wave back. It shows the country's longest serving Labor prime minister, who died peacefully at home aged 89 yesterday, taking life easy as he entered his final days. This morning his chair was empty, with the orange cushion still in its place.
