WASHINGTON - Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen is scheduled to travel to El Paso on Friday to see how the agency is conducting medical screenings and to review conditions at Border Patrol stations following the deaths this month of two migrant children who were in federal custody. Nielsen has called the death on Christmas Eve of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy in federal detention a "deeply concerning and heartbreaking" tragedy and cited U.S. immigration system failings for a growing border crisis. The top Trump administration border security official spoke out after directing a series of actions to care for undocumented immigrants taken into custody after illegal Mexican-U.S. crossings. The moves include U.S. Customs and Border Protection medical exams for all children it holds in custody. The year was 1998 and it was spring break during my senior year of college. My two roommates and I borrowed my dad's van and took a road trip to Niagara Falls. We stayed overnight in Buffalo, N.Y. We crossed the U.S.-Canada border the next day. It turned out to be a remarkable adventure. Twelve years later, work would take me to Montreal, where I was able to enjoy local bagels, eat a corned beef sandwich at Chez Schwartz and practice the little French I remembered from high school. Canada, in my mind, had been a fun place to go, but I never fully understood our northern neighbor's importance to the United States economy until 2015. That was when Canada's former consul general for the Southeast United States, Louise Blais — now an ambassador to the United Nations — visited me at The Tennessean and told me her country was our state's top international trading partner. Tennessee … [Read more...] about Oh Canada! Tennessee will suffer if trade deal fails
(CNN)If President Donald Trump's Twitter feed is the window to his thoughts, everything he says there should be taken seriously. So the fact that he has now on three occasions over the past month and a half threatened to "close" the US border with Mexico means he is thinking seriously about it. Border agents temporarily closed one port of entry, in San Diego, over the weekend when frustrated migrants rushed the border. They also shot tear gas to break up the crowd. The next morning Trump reiterated his "close the border" threat and added the word "permanently." But the White House has not explained exactly what the President meant when he threatened to close the border or what exactly that would entail. The path from a sweeping threat to piece of policy can be long and winding. Read More For example, during the 2016 campaign Trump made this bold proclamation after an ISIS-inspired shooting in Southern California: "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of … [Read more...] about What would actually happen if Trump actually closed the border?
Story highlights The $20 billion Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is the world's longest sea-crossing bridge. The bridge is a central plank in China's ambitious plans to develop the Greater Bay Area. Although the bridge is an engineering marvel, its construction has been dogged by controversy. (CNN)As we drive down the eerily deserted Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the murky waters of the Pearl River Delta stretch as far as the eye can see. There is no land in sight. Spanning 34 miles (55 kilometers), this is the longest sea-crossing bridge ever built. Gao Xinglin, assistant director and senior engineer at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority, meets us half way along. As we are buffeted by a strong wind, the tough conditions his construction crew experienced, as they perched on precarious platforms, working miles from land and high over the water, are evident. Gao is visibly proud of his country's monumental achievement. Due to open to the public this summer, this long … [Read more...] about The $20 billion ‘umbilical cord’: China unveils the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge
