A workshop discusses healthcare and HIV prevention for transgender women in HCM City. — VNS Photo Viet Nam News HCM CITY —  HCM City needs to develop specific healthcare policies and guidelines for transgender women as HIV prevalence among this group is estimated to be about 19 per cent worldwide, according to Dr Hoàng Đình Cảnh, deputy director of the Việt Nam Authority of HIV/AIDS Control. The risk of contracting HIV is 49 times higher for transgender women than in the general population, he said. Speaking at a workshop on healthcare and HIV prevention for transgender women on May 30 in HCM City, Cảnh said that more research and surveys should be conducted to gather information and evaluate the effectiveness of solutions. He called on the Government, NGOs, the community and transgender people to help  reduce the rate of HIV prevalence among transgender women, and achieving the UN’s 90-90-90 Goals in HIV/AIDS prevention and control by 2020. City’s Party committee aims to draw varied membership (02-02-2005) HCM CITY — The HCM City municipal Party Committee hopes to admit 6,000 new members this year, according to the organisation board of the city’s Party Committee. The Party committees should devise ways to attract students and workers particularly in private enterprises, suggested Vo Van Cuong, the city Party Committee’s deputy secretary. Party development activities improved with regard to quantity and quality during the last year, remarked Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the city Party Committee’s Organisation Board. The HCM City Party Committee admitted 6,096 new members last year, an increase of 22.5 per cent compared to the previous year. Ha added that it was a good sign that new members under 30-years-old represented 46 per cent of the total additional members. ASEAN job safety and health meet to kick off in Ha Long City (24-02-2005) HA NOI — The sixth conference of the ASEAN Occupational Safety and Health Network (ASEAN-OSHNET) Co-ordination Committee will take place in Ha Long City, in the north-eastern coastal Quang Ninh Province, from March 17-19. The annual conference will focus on building a webpage for the ASEAN Network, producing films on regional occupational safety, and exchanging information and training experiences. Attendees will also discuss a logo for the ASEAN network, devise strategies for future projects, and establish safety standards and norms. Organisers expect to draw 40 representatives from 10 member countries of ASEAN, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. This is the first ASEAN-OSHNET conference to be held in Viet Nam. Thai navy docks in HCM City for visit (12-05-2005) HA NOI — As part of their three-day visit to HCMC, captains and officers of the Thai Royal Navy placed a wreath at the memorial statue of late President Ho Chi Minh, on Monday. The visit by the Thai navy’s Taksin and Klaeng vessels to Vietnam was approved by the Vietnamese government. They also made courtesy calls to leaders of the city People’s Committee, the Command of Military Zone 7 and also those of the Southern Navy Command. Manh was warmly welcomed by French Parliament member and City of Montreuil Mayor Jean-Pierre Brard, local people and the Vietnamese French community. Brard informed Manh about the city and its co-operation programme with Viet Nam. HCM City leaders face ballot (11-06-2005) HCM CITY — The chairmen of the HCM City People’s Committee and People’s Council will begin facing annual confidence votes this year as part of a movement to build democracy at grassroots levels. The votes are expected to take place by the end of every year in 317 wards, villages and towns in HCM City. Public meetings are to be held each year, leading up to the confidence vote, to review the work of the chairman. Instituting citywide confidence votes was agreed upon at a Thursday conference that reviewed the success of previous votes on the qualifications of chairmen in the city’s wards, villages and towns. The decision to hold votes also grew out of a Government decree on building and implementing democracy at grassroots levels. In a response to the decree, HCM City launched a pilot programme of people’s conferences to vote on performance of People’s council and committee chairman in 43 wards, villages and towns.
