Politbureau urges HCM City to speed up economic growth (15-10-2005) HA NOI — Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh yesterday asked authorities and residents of HCM City to continue their efforts to boost economic growth, exports and revenue for the State Budget in the next five years. Manh’s made his comments while holding a working session between Politbureau and officials of the HCM City Party Committee to review and discuss preparatory work for the 8th Party Congress of the city. HCM City requires a proper assessment of opportunities, advantages, challenges and difficulties to further development in the next five years, Manh said. VN, Laos, Cambodia map out border zones in HCMC (16-06-2007) HCM CITY — Experts from Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia have identified the exact location where the three countries’ borders meet during a conference this week in HCM City. The position will now be marked with a border post as agreed to by each party. Nguyen Hong Thao, head of the Department for the Western Border under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Border Commission, led the Vietnamese delegation. Thao said delegates embraced feelings of solidarity, friendship and mutual understanding and all sides agreed on principles and basis for the demarcation. Nguyễn Nhị Linh, director of Ninh Thuận Province’s Preventive Health Centre, said it was not yet an epidemic, but 287 dengue fever cases had been recorded since the beginning of this year, compared with just 10 cases reported in the same period last year. Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm City had the highest number with over 100 cases, followed by Ninh Phưóc, Ninh Sơn and Ninh Hải districts. An American-Vietnamese collector, Trần Thắng, has donated to the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Island District the Pattie De La Conchinchine , an 1827 map printed in the six-volume World Atlas ( Atlas universel ) by Belgium cartographer Phillippe Vandermaelen (1795-1869). The map, 1.2m wide and 0.85m high, is one of the most detailed maps indicating clearly Việt Nam’s sovereignty over the Hoàng Sa (Paracels) Islands. The city has stopped issuing groundwater extraction permission to new construction projects to minimise the salinisation of underground aquifers and preserve water resources. Households in residential areas with common water supply systems are also no longer allowed to extract groundwater. Reports from the city’s environmental department show that microbiological groundwater contamination has occurred in some districts, with the water showing coliform and ecoli indexes above permissible limits. The situation is most severe in Tiên Lãng District, where high concentrations of organic matter and metal were found in groundwater. In the areas on the city’s 1:2000 ratio programming map, individuals or organisations will be allowed to renovate or build a new structure with no more than three floors. In mixed agricultural land and residential areas , owners can either renovate or build a new building if the structure was built before July 2006. If it was built after July 2006, only renovation can be done. In areas with road traffic projects or along railway safety corridors, owners can renovate or build a new house of no more than three floors. The Central Economic Commission (CEC) and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) discussed the progress on the maps yesterday at a meeting titled “Evaluation of five-year- implementation of guidelines, policies and legislation on minerals”. The mapping of mineral resources over a total area of 62,380sq.km, divided into 35 projects, is supposed to be complete by 2020. Fourteen projects over an area of 14,500sq.km area were begun in 2016 and are still underway, while seven others accounting for 18,124sq.km are behind the schedule. The entry of Chinese cars will be allowed on a trial basis until December 31 this year, Vũ Văn Hợp, Chief of the Secretariat of the provincial People’s Committee, told the Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. Since January 1, 2017, the province has only allowed cars with less than nine seats owned by Chinese nationals and enterprises to enter Móng Cái City and vice versa during a trial period of one year. Chinese tourists are not allowed to stay beyond three days per entrance. In case of accidents or broken-down cars, the stay is extended by another day.
