As hard as he tried, and as many strikes as he landed, Max Holloway couldn't put Brian Ortega out or make him quit. But after battering the face of Ortega (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and closing his left eye, Holloway (20-3 MMA, 16-3 UFC) got a little help from the cageside doctor, who urged a stoppage at the end of Round 4, resulting in a TKO victory for the defending UFC featherweight champ. The featherweight title bout was the main event of Saturday's UFC 231 show at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. From the start, Holloway proved himself to be the smoother, cleaner striker, tagging Ortega with aggressive combinations and overwhelming him with sheer offensive output. But despite eating several stinging punches in the opening round, Ortega wasn't about to go away easily. With his nose bloodied early, he didn't land as often as Holloway, but he did fire back hard, landing some heavy counters that appeared to hurt Holloway at … [Read more...] about Max Holloway overwhelms Brian Ortega in gritty, gutsy title fight win at UFC 231
Moments after Jordan Rinaldi defeated Jason Knight in their preliminary fight Saturday night at UFC 230 he smiled and flashed his hand at the camera… and made everyone at the same time wonder what the heck happened to his finger?! Real talk, what the hell is wrong with @JordanRinaldi 's finger?! #UFC230pic.twitter.com/rcmNpNqhvd— Max Randall (@Max_Randall) November 4, 2018 See how crooked that left ring finger is? Well, Rinaldi explained after the fight just what's wrong with that gnarly digit: So… he bit me. No, he didn't (laughs). Dirt bike wreck 15 years ago so it's not special. It breaks every now and then so it hurts. It's been like this for 15 years, or 16 now, I'm getting old. I should have (shown it off) during the interview, just like, 'Joe Rogan it's great to see you,' (and lift it up) like a Ricky Bobby thing. He also told a funny story about the first time his wife saw his busted finger. The double champ’s first UFC heavyweight title defense couldn’t have gone any more according to plan if he’d scripted it out with help from his opponent. Daniel Cormier took Derrick Lewis down, roughed him up on the mat, then locked him in a rear-naked choke to force the submission finish midway through the second round. What’s more, Cormier hardly took any damage in the process, using his wrestling to nullify Lewis’ power before exploiting his weaknesses on the mat to get the submission at the 2:14 mark of Round 2. The bout served as the main event of UFC 230 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main card aired on pay-per-view, with prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. Cormier’s strategy in the fight was more or less exactly what most people expected, and the challenger Lewis proved unable to do a single thing to stop it. Cormier taps Lewis in the 2nd round! The UFC returns to Madison Square Garden on Saturday for UFC 230. The MMA "trade" featuring Demetrious Johnson and Ben Askren has taken a major leap forward. ESPN.com today reported the UFC has finalized terms to release former longtime flyweight champion Johnson (27-3-1 MMA, 15-2-1 UFC) from the company. As a result, ONE Championship has agreed to release Askren (18-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) from his deal so that the two can flip organizations. Both fighters verified the situation on social media. Askren, also a former Bellator welterweight champion, last competed in November, picking up a TKO win over Shinya Aoki in Singapore. At the time, "Funky" said it would likely be his last MMA contest, though he recently took to social media to say there was a "98 percent" chance he'll still compete in the UFC. Now those odds have been boosted to 100 percent, and Askren has made it clear there's a long list of opponents he'd like to face by calling out nearly every relevant name at 170 pounds.
