You may have heard that Xena: Warrior Princess —the gloriously camp 1990s fantasy show starring Lucy Lawless—is being rebooted by NBC. Now the pilot's executive producer has suggested he'll be going boldly where the original series failed to go, by turning the heroine into an out-and-proud lesbian. Of course, the '90s series had various homoerotic undertones between Xena and her partner-in-crime Gabrielle, played by Renee O'Connor, but for whatever reason the romantic chemistry was nothing more than implied. That'll all change in the reboot, says Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who is also behind CW drama The 100, a show that until recently featured an openly gay character. Responding to a question on Tumblr over the weekend, he wrote: " Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons [compared to The 100 ]. There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually … [Read more...] about Xena Will be an Out and Proud Lesbian in TV Reboot, Hints Writer

DW employees from Africa, Asia offer Germans tips for heat
Germany is just coming out of this summer's latest heat wave. For two consecutive days, the country recorded all-time temperature records, reaching 42.6 degrees Celsius (108.7 F) in Lower Saxony. This resulted in train air-conditioning systems malfunctioning, tracks being bent out of shape and delayed travel. A nuclear power plant had to be taken offline after the coolant system got too hot. DW journalists from around the world shared their experiences growing up in warmer climates to help Germans prepare for the next heat wave. Li Shitao, of DW's China desk, said humidity made living in Shanghai difficult. He said June and August were the worst months in the Chinese coastal metropolis. "During the summer holidays,” he said, "I basically had a shower every hour." As a child, he lived in a little apartment with his family. Its wall faced west, meaning that the sun heated their home intensely during the afternoon and evening. "It was like living in an oven," he said. He remembers … [Read more...] about DW employees from Africa, Asia offer Germans tips for heat

Important: Is It Spelled
Les Miserables Photo: Universal Pictures From time to time, there are issues so divisive that they threaten to tear apart the entire Vulture staff, and, if left untended, could destroy the very fabric of reality as we know it. It is incumbent on us, then, to address these issues in a manner befitting their extreme importance. Today’s hot topic: When you abbreviate Les Misérables, should you spell it Les Mis or Les Miz? Amanda Dobbins and Kyle Buchanan will now plead their cases. AMANDA: I suppose we should start with the obvious (and, in my opinion, unfair) fact that Vulture has chosen Miz as the house style. As best I can recall, we went with Miz because you wrote the first post and chose that vulgar “z.” So my first question to you, Kyle, would be: Why did you do that? KYLE: Let me put this in terms you can understand, Amanda. With your strict adherence to Mis, you reveal yourself to be the unyielding Javert to my progressive, humane, sexy Valjean. Miz is … [Read more...] about Important: Is It Spelled
Brazilian environment minister attacks DW columnist with Nazi remark
Brazilian Environment Minister Ricardo Salles criticized DW on Thursday for the publication of an opinion piece criticizing Brasilia's environmental policies. The column by Rio-based German journalist Philipp Lichterbeck said the new Bolsonaro-led government was bent on turning the country's landscape into "an inferno of soy, pastureland, agrochemicals, sugarcane and mining industry." The destruction of the environment "seems to be one of the main projects" of the new leadership, Lichterbeck wrote. "These are people who act and speak with arrogance and cruelty .... who laugh when a 7-year-old dies. They celebrate when police commit massacres in slums, when environmentalists or black councilmen die." The text, titled "The project of Mephistopheles" and first published on DW's Portuguese site, provoked an angry response from Salles, who tweeted that the description of Brazil "is more akin to what Germany itself did to Jewish children, and to many millions of … [Read more...] about Brazilian environment minister attacks DW columnist with Nazi remark
