Historical forest in Tây Ninh to be merged with national park

Photo: Thanhnien.vn Viet Nam News TÂY NINH — The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has agreed with the Tây Ninh Province’s policy to merge the Chàng Riệc historical and cultural forest with Lò Gò-Xa Mát National Park for administrative purposes. Chàng Riệc used to be a resistance base and the headquarters of the revolution in the south and has famous sites like the Central Office for South Vietnam and a tunnel system. The ministry has called on the Tây Ninh Province People’s Committee to complete the merger plan and seek approval from the Government. Local residents in the central province of Bình Phước have returned 145ha of encroached land to Bù Gia Mập National Park. — VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam News BÌNH PHƯỚC — At least 145ha of land has been returned to Bù Gia Mập National Park by local residents in the central province of Bình Phước, according to the local forest management board. Vương Đức Hòa, deputy director of the board in Bù Gia Mập District, said the households who returned land have received other land through a relocation project. Over the past 10 years, the province has converted forest land for 130 households with more than 160ha of encroached forest land. The relocation project aims to recover forest land illegally occupied by locals in the province. According to the park’s deputy director, Nguyễn Thượng Hải, the park is going to survey the number of elephants in the herd, which were discovered through the cameras and by residents living near the park’s buffer zones. In recent weeks, rangers followed residents’ reports and found elephant footprints in the park forest, including both mature and baby elephant footprints. The footprints were scattered across three sites at the park, and rangers could not identify if they were footprints of elephants from the same herd or from different herds.
