Delegates set to open seventh NA meeting (05-05-2005) Ha Noi — The 7th meeting of the National Assembly opens in Ha Noi today, where delegates are expected to approve dozens of new and revised laws and to offer their opinions on the country’s socio-economic situation and the implementation of the State budget. Eleven draft laws are expected to be approved, including the law on education (revised), the law on pharmacy, the law on customs (revised), the law on military service (revised), the law on commerce, the Civil Code (revised), and the law on State audit. Also at the meeting, the legislative body is expected to issue a resolution on amendments to the program of building laws and ordinances for 2005 and for the whole 11th tenure of the National Assembly. APEC leaders wind up talks (20-11-2006) HA NOI — Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with US President George W. Bush on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of mutual concern on the sidelines of the 14th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in the capital yesterday. The two presidents agreed that Sino-US relations had developed strongly and steadily. Bush said China was very important for the US and expressed his wish to work together to solve problems such as the North Korea and Iran nuclear issues. He also said he wanted China to become a "consumer nation" so that more US goods could be exported to China. Regarding bilateral trade relations, President Hu said Sino-US trade relations were developing positively despite the deficit in US exports to China. According to US statistics, in the first seven months of this year, US exports to China increased by 35 per cent against the same period last year. Assembly ratifies WTO membership (29-11-2006) HA NOI — The National Assembly ratified Viet Nam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO, with 90.24 per cent of the delegates voting in favour, at the capital yesterday. In his closing speech after voting, Nguyen Phu Trong, National Assembly Chairman, said Viet Nam’s accession to the WTO was a political, economic and social event of great significance. It demonstrated Viet Nam’s increasing prestige in the international community and was proof of the determination and perseverance of the Vietnamese people in turning the homeland into an independent, self-reliant country with political stability and social equality, he said.
