The golf world developed such a frenzied state as Tiger Woods claimed the Masters that the helpful vagaries of a new schedule were forgotten. Woods was due to go in pursuit of a 16th major within weeks, even before he took the surprising decision to skip the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte. Bethpage Black has been afforded the perfect storm: Woods, in his first start since winning in such epic scenes at Augusta National, will chase his fifth US PGA Championship’s Wanamaker Trophy, and his first since 2007, from Thursday. Woods has previous for illustrations of how less is more. In 2008, with knee problems more acute than outsiders had recognised, he finished as runner-up to Trevor Immelman at Augusta National and did not re-appear until the US Open in June. Woods duly prevailed in a play-off at Torrey Pines, with fitness matters meaning that glory is widely recognised as one of the greatest in his illustrious career. Such fairytales had been consigned to past tense until … [Read more...] about Tiger Woods’ hunt for more majors guarantees high drama at US PGA
Tiger woods injuries
In the spring of 2014 Tiger Woods was at work on the range around the back of his house, practising his short game like always. Days earlier he had shot a 78 on the final day of the Cadillac Championship, the worst fourth-round score of his life. His back had been spasming but he felt he had to get out and exercise. He stroked a flop shot over a bunker and the minute he had finished the swing he fell down flat on his back, overcome with a pain so severe that he could hardly breathe, let alone get back on his feet. He was out of hearing distance and he did not have his mobile phone on him, so there was nothing he could do but lie there and wait for someone to come. It was his seven-year-old daughter, Sam, who found him. “Daddy,” she said, what are you doing lying on the ground?” “Sam, thank goodness you’re here,” he told her. “Can you go tell the guys inside to try to get the cart out to help me back up?” “What’s wrong?” … [Read more...] about Was Tiger Woods’s Masters win the greatest comeback in sporting history?
CARY, N.C. (Reuters) - Matching or breaking the record for career major titles might just be a bridge too far for Tiger Woods, said his former mentor Mark O’Meara, who nevertheless hoped Woods will prove him wrong. Kyodo/via REUTERS With 15 major championships, Woods is three short of the mark held by Jack Nicklaus, and at age 43 is battling ‘Father Time’ in his quest to catch the Golden Bear. A decade ago it seemed a formality that Woods would overtake Nicklaus, but injuries and scandal were followed by a decade-long drought that only ended when he won the Masters in April. “Do I think he’s going to catch Jack’s record? Personally, I don’t, but I’d love to see it happen, love to see him win … [Read more...] about Eighteen majors a bridge too far for Woods says mentor O’Meara
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — The goal for Jennifer Kupcho was to get to the CME Group Tour Championship. Now that she’s here, a big part of her can’t wait for it to end. Even for a 22-year-old fresh out of college, Kupcho has every reason to be worn out. “I’m looking forward to the end of the tournament,” Kupcho said. “I’m excited to play in it. It was my goal after I made it into Asia events, to get into the CME. But I’m definitely tired.” An NCAA champion as a junior, Kupcho is best known for her back-nine charge to win the Augusta National Women’s Amateur the Saturday before the Masters. The performance was so memorable that Golf Channel has produced a one-hour retrospective to be shown Nov. 26. Equally impressive is what brought her to Tiburon Golf Club. Kupcho qualified for the LPGA Tour last year and deferred her membership until she finished her career at Wake Forest. She was No. 700 in the women’s world ranking when … [Read more...] about Kupcho’s long and successful year comes to an end
