It’s probably pure coincidence that the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson match on Thanksgiving weekend was announced the same week as the first anniversary of one of the biggest con jobs in pay-per-view history. You might remember a year ago when Conor McGregor went from mixed martial arts into boxing to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the gullible fans of UFC couldn’t wait to plunk down $100 to see all the action unfold on their TV screens at home. Unfortunately there wasn’t much action, much as predicted beforehand by those who saw through the smokescreen and recognized the whole thing as a farce. Mayweather systematically broke McGregor down in a mismatch that went into the 10th round only because Mayweather carried McGregor to appease the crowd that paid to see it. That’s not to say the so-called fight wasn’t a success, at least for the bank accounts of both men. It may have bordered on WWE, but it made Mayweather $300 million or so and gave McGregor a … [Read more...] about Column: Pay to watch golf? Tiger and Phil in a money grab

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — The distinction between golf’s two oldest championships goes beyond one being played on links courses in the UK and the other being played in the United States. They also have a different reach, which can lead to a different idea of “Open.” The U.S. Open likes to consider itself the most democratic of the four major championships because roughly half of the 156-man field has to go through qualifying. This year, 76 players were exempt from qualifying, including the special invitation for two-time champion Ernie Els, meaning slightly more than half of the field will have to go through 36-hole qualifying to get to Pebble Beach. Sixteen of the 76 players — 21 percent — were exempt by reaching the Tour Championship at East Lake. For international players who are not PGA Tour members, the only way to avoid qualifying is to be in the top 60 in the world three weeks before the U.S. Open. Otherwise, there are 36-hole qualifiers in America, … [Read more...] about Differences in Opens shown through exemptions
It was conditions in which any type of outdoor activity was hazardous, let alone high-level sport. Visibility was down to a little over 100m and the air quality index was going off the charts. In this situation, starting the first round of the Panasonic Open India at 6.40 am was highly optimistic. The tournament finally got underway at 11 am, after a delay of more than four hours. Playing sport in the National Capital Region in early winter is not an advisable option, and it was proved once again at the Gurugram’s Classic Golf and Country Club. Only 60 of the 126 players in the field teed up on Thursday with the rest beginning on Friday. With daylight fading earlier at this time of the year, there was no possibility of the full field being in action on the first day. Those who played on Thursday will have Friday off. With the smog and low visibility unlikely to relent at least for another day, there is a possibility that the Asian Tour event would be reduced to a 54-hole affair. … [Read more...] about Panasonic Open India: Golfers mask their agony
(Reuters) - The PGA Tour could be headed to its second Monday finish in less than a month after torrential rain prevented play in the scheduled first round at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico on Thursday. The first round has been rescheduled to start on Friday morning, but more rain is forecast for the Camaleon course in Playa del Carmen. “Everything always drains to the mangroves here and there’s no place for it to go with that much rain,” said PGA Tour rules official Slugger White. “Monday’s always in the mix.” The Mayakoba Classic is the penultimate event on the PGA Tour this year. Rain on the other side of the world washed out Friday play at the Zozo Championship outside Tokyo on Oct. 25, which led to a Monday finish at the tournament won by Tiger woods. Conor McGregor couldn’t win his fight, though he seemed to help the Dallas Cowboys win theirs. Just ask Jerry Jones, who had reason to be smitten with the UFC star after the team Jones owns blew out Jacksonville on Sunday with the fighter/whiskey salesman providing the emotional spark. “He just energized every place he went in the stadium,” Jones said. “You’d like to say we’re going to have to get him in here for every game in order to have a good first half, at least.” McGregor not only wowed the crowd but inspired players to do his signature walk. The Cowboys responded like they were entering the octagon instead of playing football in a performance that was as dominating as it was surprising. “I don’t know if it was Conor McGregor or whatever it was, but we came out and attacked,” Dak Prescott said. Maybe the Cowboys should try to persuade McGregor to hang around. He’s got some free time, after all, after losing his … [Read more...] about Column: How about some other sports for Conor McGregor?
