Bar Wayo, the latest restaurant from David Chang’s Momofuku Group, sits at the edge of Pier 17 at South Street Seaport in Manhattan, with windows looking out at the East River. The name derives from “wayo secchu” — the blending of Japanese and Western styles — and on a recent Friday afternoon, a few weeks before the space opened to the public, the staff was working to dial in the concept. A problem emerged — none of this was exactly light fare. “We could have a radicchio salad with a spicy hozon … [Read more...] about Momofuku’s Secret Sauce: A 30-Year-Old C.E.O.

Lisa Henderson ended the year by fulfilling a longtime dream of operating a business. The mother of three — Abby, 9, Ela, 14, and Dov, 17 — said the new venture, which opened in November, is a family affair with all of the children helping at the store. Because of that she let them be a part of the decision-making process in determining what type of store they would operate. "Of course they thought a candy store would be fun," Henderson said. "I was OK with that. I mainly wanted to start something small so that I could learn the different aspects of owning a business." The family named the company Gimme Sugar, using red lips as its logo. Henderson said the idea was derived from the Southern term of giving someone sugar (a kiss), "plus it covers all the sweets that we offer." When ordering a logo that now appears on T-shirts, shorts and lip balm, she had to decline the first rendition. "The first one (logo) … [Read more...] about Gimme Sugar candy shop offers chocolates, soft drinks, ice cream and other sweet treats
