Stepping up your game
Faced with a severe challenge, sports teams either step up or step back. It's all clear as to which direction the Oxnard High girls basketball team chose to take. "We have a group of girls who want to get better. They're always trying to improve," said Oxnard head coach Tim Murray. "We had a ways to go at the start of the season. We have some things to iron out. But the players responded. We've got a lot more work to do, but we've put together a pretty good season." Indeed, it just might turn into a championship season. Here’s a wild thought, undocumented, unsubstantiated and altogether Out There. Some might call it Fake News. I prefer Alternative Truth. Whatever it is, it’s grist for conversation, and conversating is what we do in This Space. Is FC Cincinnati a reason the Reds and Bengals have stepped up their games this offseason? I didn’t say The Reason. That would be an alternative case too hard to make. But a reason? I have zero proof of that, and certainly no one from any of the three teams would lend any wisdom to that thought. But everyone has eyes. Everyone can count. Here’s the count from last year: FCC average home attendance: 25,717 in 17 games Reds: 20,116 Bengals, for 8 games: 50,753, 31st of 32 teams. Only the LA Chargers, who played in a 30,000-seat stadium used by the LA Galaxy of the MLS, drew fewer fans. It’s far more likely other factors were more important: The Reds (i.e. the Big Man) got sick of losing. It's springtime in El Paso, which means it's time to put away your winter chanclas and take out your summer ones. Just kidding; we know it's the same pair. With the changing season also comes changing popularity in phone apps. Snapchat was once king of visual-based social media, but after a series of bad ads and updates, the app has been dethroned by Instagram. And what better way to learn how to use Instagram than by going outside and documenting everything? This is by no means a comprehensive list, so don't gripe if we didn't include your favorite spot. In fact, feel free to tag us on Instagram (at elpasotimes) from your favorite spot. Mount Cristo Rey The very large mountain attracts both the religious and the fit. Thousands climb up the mountain at least once a year as a religious act, but the mountain is not restricted to only the God-fearing.
