They packed the human skin in cardboard boxes lined with foam and dry ice, and shipped it off. With that, the workers at a facility in southwestern Ohio became part of an incredible drama unfolding 8,000 miles away. A volcano had just rained superheated ash, steam and gas over New Zealand's White Island, a tourist site that dozens of people from around the world were visiting for the day. Some people perished before they could be rescued. Many of the survivors were left badly burned. And doctors were now struggling with another huge problem. They were low on human skin to temporarily cover the burns. Urgent calls went out to skin banks - a vital but niche part of the world of rapid-response medicine. At Community Tissue Services in Kettering, Ohio - on a campus overlooking a quiet pond outside Dayton - a shipment was quickly pulled together of around 300 square feet of human skin, or enough to fully cover more than 15 bodies. "It takes a huge amount of skin when you have an … [Read more...] about New Zealand needed human skin to treat volcano burn victims. Help came from Ohio.

The ozone layer that shields life from cancer-causing solar rays is slowly recovering, a UN study has revealed. A hole was found in the ozone layer above Antarctica in the 1980s as a result of harmful chemicals being pumped into the atmosphere. This has allowed large amounts of ultraviolet light to reach Earth unabated and has been linked to an increase in skin cancer diagnoses. Severe bans on the manufacture of these products has seen the hole in the ozone recover at a rate of one to three per cent per decade, scientists have now found. This process reverses the damage done by years of dangerous depletion and is expected to be fully repaired by the 2060s, the study revealed. There’s a phenomenon in video games that people call “the zone”: a state of mind-body oneness where your reflexes and senses feel that they are operating without conscious input. The zone isn’t the territory of blockbuster shooters or narrative adventures: it is the domain of puzzle and rhythm games, arcade shmups, games about patterns and reflexes. These are games that temporarily and pleasurably hijack your neural pathways. Enter Tetris Effect, fittingly named for the hypnagogic hallucinations experienced by people who’ve spent so much time stacking blocks that they visualise falling tetrominos whilst falling asleep, or idly imagine arranging furniture into neat lines. First released last year on PlayStation 4 and newly available on PC, it is a sumptuous, mind-altering, humanist interpretation of the classic Soviet puzzle game. It combines the simple, pleasing act of fitting shapes together until they disappear with intense visual backdrops and dynamic … [Read more...] about Tetris Effect review – makes your skin tingle and your mind hum
On Monday, a Virginia megachurch pastor issued a statement explaining his decision to pray for President Donald Trump during a surprise visit. After leaving the National Golf Club in Sterling Virginia, Trump went to McClean Bible Church, where Pastor David Platt prayed for the president on stage. In a statement released on the church’s website, Platt said he had minutes to decide what to do after learning the president was on his way to the church. “But I was immediately called backstage and told that the president of the United States was on his way to the church, would be there in a matter of minutes, and would like for us to pray for him,” Platt wrote. “I immediately thought about my longing to guard the integrity of the gospel in our church.” He said 1 Timothy 2:1-6 came to his mind and he decided to pray for the president. Platt also said that his prayer is in no way endorsing the president. “My aim was in no way to endorse the … [Read more...] about Pastor Explains Decision To Pray For Trump On Stage During Visit To ‘Hurt’ Churchgoers
As families of the Australian survivors of the New Zealand volcano disaster wait anxiously on their loved ones’ prognosis, there will be a small comfort in knowing that some of the world’s best plastic surgeons and burns specialists will lead their care as they return home for treatment. Specialist paramedics travelled to New Zealand as part of a medical evacuation team to accompany patients on their return, with 11 Australians flown to major burns units throughout the country including Concord hospital in Sydney and the Alfred hospital in Melbourne. More patients were expected to arrive on Friday evening. A vicious acid attacker who "ruined" his neighbour "for life" and still haunts his dreams has been jailed for 20 years. Santokh Johal's victim has not been able to sleep because he "often sees him in my dreams trying to finish me off" after he suffered what police called "catastrophic" injuries. The 53-year-old attacker, from Leyton, scarred his victim for life and left him paranoid and unable to leave the house after he squirted him with sulphuric acid from a bottle through a window during an argument. The victim, in his 30s, told Snaresbrook Crown Court how, after skin graft surgery on around 20 per cent of his body, it "does not feel like my body anymore" and has "taken me away from a normal quality of life". He will be being treated for the horrendous burns indefinitely. Remorseless Johal was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, December 10 to 20 years’ imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 15 years with the remainder on licence. He was found guilty on Friday, June … [Read more...] about Smiling acid attacker scars neighbour for life as he’s begging police for help
