VN social security needs change: UN (01-12-2006) HA NOI — The need to rethink Viet Nam’s approach to social security is becoming increasingly apparent as the country’s income levels continue to rise, said UN Resident Co-ordinator John Hendra yesterday. At a UN-hosted international workshop on the development of social security systems for human development, Hendra said the rapid formation of national markets and greater participation in regional and global economies had accelerated existing trends towards social and geographic mobility. As a result, said Hendra, "Vietnamese people are increasingly dependent on wages and salaries", instead of the safety provided by co-operatives and State-owned enterprises. NCB reports triple pre-tax profit rise National Citizen Bank (NCB) recorded pre-tax profit of nearly VND91 billion (US$3.9 million) last year, a three-fold increase from the previous year, according to the bank’s financial report. However, the bank’s handsome profit did not come from its net interest income, which dropped by 12% over 2017. By December 31 last year, NCB’s total assets had reached more than VND72.4 trillion, a slight increase of 0.8% versus early last year. Of which, loans increased 11.1% to hit VND35.3 trillion, while its deposits and lending at other credit institutions fell 29% to some VND6.7 trillion.
