James Purdy
James Purdy, who has died aged 94, wrote outlandish, idiosyncratic novels that did not sell in large quantities but survive, sometimes in print, while many workaday bestsellers are vague memories. Purdy was vexed by his early struggles, and, although a spry figure on his walks through Brooklyn, maintained a privacy tantamount to anonymity. Only recently, after six decades' work, did he lift the curtain on a life whose mid-west beginnings fostered a baroque view of America that bracketed him with southern gothic - where domineering women and immolations are among life's obstacles. Purdy was born near Fremont, Ohio, one of five sons of parents of Huguenot and Scots-Presbyterian ancestry. Within a few years his businessman father had departed. The residual family travelled the state, sometimes staying on the grandparents' farm. Hard times were worsened by Purdy's failing to shine at numerous schools, but one teacher did encourage his writing. In 1932 he finally left Findlay high school. … [Read more...] about James Purdy

The cousin of three Aboriginal boys from the same family who took their lives at the height of the suicide crisis says alcohol and drugs are killing kids, and tearing apart families. Johnny Divilli, 23, grew up so close to his three male cousins they were more like his brothers. The tight knit group of four of were all born at the same hospital, before going on to attend the same primary school where they were all in the same class. But somewhere along the line Mr Divilli's three cousins lost their way. While he went off to 'whitefella' private school, they remained living in the Kimberley. Mr Divilli told Daily Mail Australia how they saw no future for themselves and one day became so desperate they decided to take their own lives - something he blames on drugs, alcohol and a lack of support. One in four young women in UK report mental health problems, study shows
A quarter of young women in the UK have suffered from anxiety and depression, according to a new survey released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The figures were collected as part of a wide-ranging survey gauging the wellbeing of people aged between 16 and 24. They show that, despite an increase in the number of those who said their quality of life had improved since 2009, one in four young women said they had faced symptoms linked to poor mental wellbeing in 2014-15. The report said that young women were “significantly more likely” than their male counterparts to recognise and admit being anxious or depressed, with less than one in six young men reporting similar symptoms. The ONS report used data taken from surveys that focused on a person’s overall happiness – shown by their attitudes to issues such as relationships, work, education and finances – to create a nationwide picture. The results show that while more than a third of young people … [Read more...] about One in four young women in UK report mental health problems, study shows
