Shrimp farms wipe out An Biên rice fields

June 25, 2016 by vietnamnews.vn

Hundreds of farming households in An Biên District of the southern Kiên Giang Province failed to reap any rice this year due to saline water encroaching into their fields.— Photo tuoitre.vn KIÊN GIANG — Hundreds of farming households in An Biên District of the southern Kiên Giang Province failed to reap any rice this year due to saline water encroaching into their fields. However, the saline intrusion is not the consequence of weather patterns or climate change, but rather the result of local shrimp farmers pumping saltwater into their ponds, affecting nearby rice paddy fields. In Đông Thái Commune’s rice paddy fields, which have summer-fall rice crops, there are no green plants – only withering ones. Lâm Hoàng Hai, a local, said he could not cultivate this year because the water in the fields reached saline levels of 10 to 12 per cent. The rice plants die when the salt level in the water reaches 4 to 5 per cent. Other farmers also lost everything and said they felt … [Read more...] about Shrimp farms wipe out An Biên rice fields

Nguyễn Văn Tâm, director of the province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the department has directed local authorities to monitor shrimp farming to ensure shrimp diseases remain under control. High-tech shrimp breeding brings higher profits

March 19, 2018 by vietnamnews.vn

Đặng Thanh Tân has been successful with his high-tech shrimp breeding model. — VNA/VNS Photo Thùy Dung Viet Nam News NINH BÌNH — More than two years ago, Đặng Thanh Tân, a farmer in Bình Minh Town, northern Ninh Bình Province decided to switch from breeding shrimp in traditional ponds to high-tech farming. Over the course of the same breeding period, the new technique brings about higher shrimp productivity and quality than the traditional method. By the end of 2015, after studying shrimp breeding models nationwide, Tan decided to renovate his farm by building a green house and spreading out a layer of canvas at the bottom of the pond. Tân said that the high-tech shrimp farming model requires breeders to build a pond with an appropriate area (2ha), as well as additional ponds assisting the main one. Several years ago, the shrimp he raised in the traditional pond yielded low productivity as the shrimps were affected by unfavourable weather conditions and … [Read more...] about High-tech shrimp breeding brings higher profits

Phạm Văn Hậu, vice chairman of the Vĩnh Thuận District People’s Committee, said that breeding prawns lasts for six months and shrimp three months. With such a schedule, farmers can harvest three crustacean crops and one rice crop a year. The model provides an average profit of about VNĐ300 million (US$13,200) per ha per year, he said. The district plans to expand the model in Vĩnh Bình Nam, Vĩnh Bình Bắc and Bình Minh communes, which are located along the Cái Lớn River, and in Tân Thuận Commune. Renewables make up electricity shortage in shrimp farming

May 31, 2018 by vietnamnews.vn

Shrimp breeding ponds in Hàm Rồng Commune of Cà Mâu Province’s Năm Căn District. VNS File Photo. Viet Nam News HCM CITY —  Owners of shrimp-breeding ponds pay VNĐ50-200 million for electricity per hectare per crop, accounting for 10 per cent of their total cost of aquaculture production. Experts said using clean renewable energy could help the aquaculture sector in Việt Nam sustainably develop while at the same time protecting the environment. It could help ease the pressure on the national power grid and reduce CO2 emissions into the environment. According to the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), the demand for electricity from the aquaculture industry rose from 7,780MW in 2015 to 9,529MW last year but it had difficulty meeting it. Lack of long-term plans for shrimp and fish breeding sectors and coordination mechanisms between electric power suppliers and environment management agencies has also hindered EVNSPC’s power supply to the aquaculture production. … [Read more...] about Renewables make up electricity shortage in shrimp farming
