Minimum wage in Việt Nam rises, productivity stagnates

September 14, 2017 by vietnamnews.vn

Growth of minimum wage, CPI, and per capita GDP in Việt Nam in 2008-16 period. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — While labour productivity in Việt Nam remains low compared with neighbouring countries, the drastically disproportionate increase of minimum wage and wages might harm the competitiveness of businesses and the development of the country. The minimum wage grew at double-digit annual rates from 2007-2015, outpacing that of per-capita GDP and the consumer price index. These findings were revealed in a report by the Việt Nam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR) and Japanese economic experts which was released on Wednesday in Hà Nội at the workshop “Labour productivity and wage growth in Việt Nam.” Futoshi Yamauchi, senior economist from the World Bank, and member of the research team, said Việt Nam’s minimum wage increases can have more negative effects than positive, citing the finding which showed an increase of 100 per cent would cause profits over revenue of … [Read more...] about Minimum wage in Việt Nam rises, productivity stagnates

While this trend is not new to many as production costs in China continue to rise, making relocation seem like a financially viable choice to many manufacturers, there are some other major drivers worth considering as well. According to a November 2018 survey conducted by the UBS Evidence Lab, which collected … [Read more...] about Production shift from China benefits Vietnam’s industrial market: CBRE

To escape the middle-income trap and make a successful breakthrough in the 2021-2045 period, the country’s total-factor productivity (TFP) should grow by 2.67%, noted Vu Viet Ngoan, head of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Group. Ngoan as a veteran economist made the point during the workshop, “the Vietnam Economic Growth Model in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045,” which was jointly held in Hanoi on Wednesday by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), the PM’s Economic Advisory Group, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, the World Bank and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam. Apple has informed partner suppliers that it has reduced iPhone 12 mini production plans for the first half of 2021, with manufacturing of some specialty parts suspended altogether, according to a report on Wednesday. Prior to the reported downward revision, the tech giant was aggressively buying semiconductors, printed circuit boards and displays amid a worldwide parts shortage. Apple is targeting output at around 75 million iPhone units for the first half of 2021, down 20% from December 2020, the report says. Much of that downgrade is blamed on iPhone 12 mini.
