Hà Nội street offers tax-free foreign goods
Hand-carried good stores on Nguyễn Sơn Street, Hà Nội. — Photo laodong.vn Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — On Nguyễn Sơn Street in Hà Nội’s Long Biên District, there is a small alley which is home to dozens of mini-shops standing close to each other. In each store, there is a variety of goods, including cosmetics, food, beverages, clothes, tooth brushes, cigarettes, glasses, knives, chopsticks and cooking pans. All of them are foreign branded and hand carried to Việt Nam on airlines. For this reason, Alley No 158 is infamously called the “paradise of hand carried goods (HCGs)” in Hà Nội. The goods sold by residents are not low cost compared to Vietnamese products, however, they are cheaper than legally imported products. Being sold at only slightly lower cost than market prices, hand-carried perfumes, cigarettes and wine are the favourite products because legally imported goods often bear high taxes and also, there are many fakes. Nearly 20 years … [Read more...] about Hà Nội street offers tax-free foreign goods

However, it seems that the fight has not been effective, with many consumers still wary when shopping for goods at markets in Hà Nội. Minh Trường, a resident in Hà Nội’s Hoàn Kiếm District, said that he struggled to buy foreign wines. Trường once bought a fake bottle of wine sold at a liquor shop even though he checked the wine carefully. “It is quite difficult to distinguish between fake and authentic products as the bottle, label and even the colour of fake wine look identical to the real one,” he said. Quỳnh Hương, another consumer in Hoàn Kiếm District, said that she no longer trusted the liquor stores in town. The residents of Red River
Viet Nam News By Paul Kennedy The Red River that dissects Hà Nội takes its name from the colour of the silt that tints the water. But maybe there’s another reason for its moniker as this 1,149 kilometre stretch has been the life blood of Việt Nam for hundreds of years. In the 19 th century it was a lucrative trade route to China and remained the main commercial route between French Indochina and Yunnan Province. Today cargo ships can be seen carrying goods to and from the many ports dotted along its banks. But unbeknown to many living in the capital city, the Red River is a place many people call home. Living in make-shift shelters constructed from just about any items they can scavenge, find or even recover from the river itself, around 25 families live in this floating community. A man walks across a home-made bridge to get to his floating house.— VNS Photo Nguyễn Hiếu Men, women and children crowd into these ‘floating homes’ turning the muddy banks … [Read more...] about The residents of Red River
