Source: Geralt/Pixabay Public Domain If you’ve ever been called self-absorbed, you can be sure you weren’t getting a compliment. Not only is the root definition of the term negative, but it’s also saturated with unfavorable connotations. As generally understood, the concept is synonymous with self-preoccupied, self-centered, self-obsessed—and even egotistical and selfish. Dictionaries define self-absorption unappealingly as “preoccupied with oneself or one’s own affairs,” frequently adding that it’s “to the exclusion of others or the outside world.” That is, self-absorbed individuals typically don’t show much concern about anyone or anything outside their (narrow) self-interest. As such, they typically make little effort to understand others’ thoughts and feelings. And overly focused on themselves, they can easily miss the mark when they try to. They generally don’t make the best of friends. … [Read more...] about Self-Absorption: The Root of All (Psychological) Evil?
Taylor Swift has discussed her decision to publicly accuse Scooter Braun of "bullying" and slam record boss Scott Borchetta. Taylor shocked the music industry and fans in June when she shared an open letter via Tumblr in which she slammed Big Machine Records chief Borchetta for refusing to allow her to buy back the rights to her own music and instead selling them to Braun, a situation she called her "worst case scenario". Braun, who is also Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande’s longtime manager, had purchased the record label as part of a $300million (£240million) deal. But in response Taylor shared an emotional letter in which she criticised Borchetta and accused Braun of "incessant bullying". Now, in a new interview with Music Week, Taylor revealed that the reason she decided to be so public with her allegations was partly because of the fans and because there had been ongoing behind the scenes drama between her and Borchetta for years. "I thought it was important … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift has finally discussed her decision to speak out against record boss Scott Borchetta
Source: mavo/Shutterstock From the time we're young, we’re told that it’s important to play nicely with others. Some of us become more adept at social skills than others, however, reflecting both our own personalities and the types of experiences we have had in our family, school, and on the playground. We know it’s nicer to be around people who are nice, but what’s the right amount of niceness? New research on social skills in children suggests ways that even adults can measure and improve their niceness quotients. The Mayo Clinic’s Stephen Whiteside and his colleagues (2016) developed a measure that would allow parents to gauge the "niceness" of their children, as indicated by their friendships and social skills. Of course, every parent believes his or her children to be perfect, or hopes they are, so the Whiteside group needed to use items on their scale that had a clear behavioral focus. They wanted the items to be … [Read more...] about 15 Questions to Test Your ‘Niceness Quotient’
Source: Self-Love/Fee Images from Pixabay How Treatable Are Narcissists? The age-old problem with diagnosing mental disorders is that once you pin someone with a label, you tend to “fix” that person in time and space. Labels are typically both reductive and absolutist. And in this curious world of ours, just about everything human is relative—and changeable. To make matters more complicated still, there are instances where a person’s psychopathology is irremediable—say, in a hard-core sociopath, or one with severe autism or organic brain damage. And to add yet another level of complexity, one problem that, say, almost all discussions on narcissism encounter is that—like virtually all mental and emotional disorders—there are degrees of this disturbance. Many individuals reveal narcissistic traits, while a only a few of them embody a full-blown narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). In my own professional work with narcissistic individuals, … [Read more...] about Can You Help a Narcissist Become Less Self-Absorbed?
