In this election I’m lending my vote to a Liberal Democrat to beat the Tory. There, I’ve admitted my guilty tactical secret. I feel dirty, temporarily backing a party in the awful ConDem coalition four years ago. And sad as a Leftie excited by Labour’s radical programme who’d love to see Corbyn in No 10. Yet it’s my best way to see that rather than voting for the party I really want. Labour marooned 23,000 behind hasn’t a cat in hell’s chance of winning in London’s Richmond Park and North Kingston where I live. Lib Dem Sarah Olney needs only several dozen of Labour’s 5,733 voters holding their noses to overturn Zac Goldsmith’s wafer-thin 45 majority and Boris Johnson’s lost a seat. So I’ll do my bit for the democratic socialist revolution by helping deprive Johnson of a Tory majority, hopefully opening Downing Street’s gates to Red Jezza. Lib Dems must do the same by voting Labour in Labour constituencies or … [Read more...] about Kevin Maguire: It makes me feel dirty, but I’m voting Lib Dem in this election

The information watchdog is investigating whether Downing Street covered up correspondence relating to Uber, amid accusations that David Cameron tried to protect the taxi app from tougher regulation proposed by the London mayor’s office. The Information Commissioner’s Office said it was making inquiries about why Downing Street said it had no record of correspondence from a former No 10 adviser, Daniel Korski, with City Hall relating to Uber dated October 2015. Documents released by Transport for London reveal that Korski exchanged emails with senior staff about Uber, which at the time was fighting proposals by the then mayor Boris Johnson’s office to bring in restrictions on how drivers could pick up new customers. A spokeswoman for the watchdog said: “We have received a complaint and we are looking into these serious allegations.” Theresa May and Sadiq Khan are also facing calls to take a close look at why their predecessors Cameron and Johnson backed … [Read more...] about Data watchdog looks at whether No 10 covered up Uber correspondence
They are the Faceless Ones. The Sullied. Regarded with poisonous contempt by their fellow Labour MPs, they hide in their offices during the day, scampering outside only when necessary, to vote or to graze. They are the Nominators, without whose signatures the current leader of the Labour Party would not be in post. They are the target of much scorn, these parliamentarians who “lent” the hard left candidate their nomination to allow him to be on the ballot paper that was put before the party membership. Their only aim, they plead piteously, was to “broaden the debate”. … [Read more...] about Any functioning political party would have kicked out Jeremy Corbyn long ago
The billionaire property investors David and Simon Reuben have been linked to £46,000 in donations received by Zac Goldsmith. The developers last week secured approval for a controversial proposal to turn a London landmark into hundreds of luxury flats from the incumbent mayor, Boris Johnson. The bulk of these donations, received by the MP and Conservative London mayoral candidate since the general election, either came from the children of the Reuben brothers or from entities overseen by them but none of them was listed as being made from a person with the Reuben name. The Reuben brothers, who were born in India, first rose to prominence doing business in post-Soviet Russia before buying up several London landmarks, including John Lewis’s headquarters on Oxford Street. According to the Sunday Times they are now Britain’s richest family with a combined fortune of £13.1bn. Last Thursday Boris Johnson’s team approved the brothers’ plans for 207 luxury … [Read more...] about Zac Goldsmith received £46,000 linked to luxury flat developers
