US Energy Secretary Rick Perry announced that Washington will go after companies involved in the Russian-European pipeline project Nord Stream 2 with restrictions in the "not too distant future". "The United States Senate is going to pass a bill, the House is going to approve it, and it's going to go to the President and he's going to sign it, that is going to put sanctions on Nord Stream 2", he said during a visit to Ukraine, one of the most persistent critics of the joint venture, which is set to build a route for gas deliveries beneath the Baltic Sea. Perry, who attended the inauguration of recently elected President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, claimed that “the opposition to Nord Stream 2 is still very much alive and well in the US". His pledge prompted criticism from Moscow, which lambasted such a move as an act of unfair competition and predicted opposition … [Read more...] about Trump to Sign Bill on Sanctions Against Nord Stream 2 – US Official
Photo: richardprince4/Twitter At 12:36 p.m., Wednesday, January 11, the same day as Trump laid down an almost Stalinist fist at his first press conference since the election, an artist took to Twitter to take what feels like the inkling of an effective action — against the Trump family. A teeny thing felt deeply resonant. That afternoon, well-known artist Richard Prince posted a work of his own to Twitter — one of his “Instagram” portraits, each essentially an inkjet picture of someone else’s Instagram page (many of them are of young women posing semi-clothed). Each of the canvases measures about six-by-four feet, and when they were first exhibited, in 2014 at Gagosian Gallery, they triggered waves of internet hate: Prince, who had made his name as an appropriation artist in the 1980s, was called a fake, a flimflammer, a voyeur, a dirty old man, twisted, perverted, and more. The “portrait” he posted Wednesday was of Ivanka Trump — the … [Read more...] about Richard Prince Just Showed Artists a Way to Fight Trump. And May Have Cracked Open a New Contemporary Art Code Too.
Speculation over who could replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond has been hotting up, but now one of the frontrunners has got the backing of his co-star. Richard Madden has been one of the leads in the race, even though the next Bond movie hasn't even started filming yet. Then Bodyguard's producer said James Bond could be one of the big reasons that a second season, in which Madden stars, could be held up. Now Keeley Hawes has backed her co-star got the role. “I said to Richard while we were shooting, ‘This is like James Bond!'” she told Radio Times. “I would love to see Richard playing James Bond; I would love that. “I think he would be phenomenal.” It's looking more likely that Madden is in the running. Bodyguard definitely helped the star gain attention of those behind the movie as well as fans. Despite this, Madden isn't actually the bookies' favourite - that's Tom Hiddleston. Others in the running are Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and James … [Read more...] about James Bond: Richard Madden given backing by Bodyguard co-star to replace Daniel Craig
The alt-right movement has sought over the past two years to rebrand white nationalism, lifting it out of the obscure corners of the website Stormfront and elevating it into the mainstream political discussion. In some ways the effort succeeded. President Trump’s campaign offered white nationalists a political home in the mainstream. They heard Trump’s hardline anti-immigration stances and repeated refusals to disavow racists as a dog whistle. The alt-right itself was media- and internet-savvy and appealed to a younger demographic. Its leaders became household names. Hillary Clinton even gave a speech about the movement. Two incidents over the past year show why the alt-right’s pivot failed. One is the infamous speech given by alt-right leader Richard Spencer at a conference last year, where The Atlantic recorded attendees giving Nazi salutes. The other is what happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, where a white-nationalist “Unite the Right” … [Read more...] about The Alt-Right’s Rebranding Effort Has Failed
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — This was the breakout game Iowa had been waiting all season for from sophomore Joe Wieskamp. Wieskamp scored a season-high 23 points to go with a strong defensive effort and Iowa blew past Minnesota 72-52 on Monday night in its Big Ten home opener. Luka Garza had 21 points with 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-3, 1-1 Big Ten), who hit 8 of their first 16 3s in cruising to their second win in three tries. “He was locked in,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. “The thing that was impressive about Joe to me was that he played that kind of (great) defense.” Wieskamp opened the second half with a 3 to give Iowa its first double-digit lead, 40-29, and Wieskamp pushed it to 49-34 on a layup. Garza followed with an inside bucket that made it a 17-point game and forced Minnesota coach Richard Pitino to call a timeout even though a media stoppage was imminent. Minnesota (4-5, 0-1) showed some life though, as Daniel Oturu’s 3 cut it to 55-45 … [Read more...] about Iowa rolls past Minnesota 72-52 in Big Ten home opener
WASHINGTON (AP) — They're calling it a circus, a farce and even zany. President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have spent weeks trivializing the House impeachment inquiry ahead of Tuesday's historic unveiling of formal charges against the president. Where Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton treated the prospect of impeachment as a serious threat to their presidencies, Trump's boosters have tried to brush off the whole thing. Believing that acquittal by the GOP-controlled Senate is all but certain, they're out to convince voters to punish the president's Democratic accusers — or at least tune out the Washington spectacle. To that end, they have belittled the impeachment process with mockery, schoolyard taunts and an unyielding insistence that Trump did not a single thing wrong. They have stonewalled, refusing to allow witnesses to testify; protested by declining to send their own lawyers to hearings, and dished out the ultimate Trumpian insult: calling the proceedings … [Read more...] about Trump, allies aim to delegitimize impeachment from the start
