‘The Uniform Should Be Above Religion’
'The political leadership is not realising that it is dividing the uniform on the lines of religion.' IMAGE: Kind courtesy the Mumbai Police calendar 2018. Dr Meeran C Borwankar was Maharashtra's first woman commissioner of police and the officer in charge of the hangings of Ajmal Kasab and Yakub Memon. Dr Borwankar was one of the 49 retired civil servants who wrote to Prime Minister Narendra D Modi, telling him that 'In post-independent India, this is our darkest hour and we find the response of our government, the leaders of our political parties inadequate and feeble.' "It is most important for society, for the uniform, to be above religion. Otherwise, whom will we look up to if we feel this police station is aligned to Hindutva and this police station to a minority?" Dr Borwankar, below, left, tells Rediff.com's Archana Masih. It took the rape victim in Unnao 10 months to register an FIR against a powerful MLA and an order from the Allahabad high court to get him arrested. Identity is about values not colour or religion: My Wigan Pier Story
Abdul, 32, is an asylum seeker from North Sudan, now living in Wigan. He tells Claire Donnelly of his plans to build a new life. I had to leave Sudan because of the government - it wasn’t safe for me to stay there. I came here as an asylum seeker. I didn’t want to relocate, I was a very ambitious guy, but it wasn’t safe for me to stay. Even now my family is having problems with the government, asking about me. The UK has a reputation for being good for human rights, that’s how we see the UK. I’m grateful for having somewhere safe. I’m trying for Leave to Remain. I came to London then Liverpool where I lived in a hostel then they sent me to Wigan. I haven’t always felt welcome. This is universal in the UK, even in diverse cities. I was surprised by what I found. I was shocked at how poor some people are, the knife crime is bad and these teenagers, everyone is smoking cannabis. I get money given to me on a card - £37.75 - and I am careful … [Read more...] about Identity is about values not colour or religion: My Wigan Pier Story
Nations become more religious as population ages
As the proportion of older people increases in a country, the chances of the its society becoming more religious also go up, says a study.Older people are more inclined to believe in God and believe it is important to instil religion in children. The research suggests that population ageing can possibly slow down the transition from religious to secular values. The study, published in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, predicts that developed countries will become more religious in 20 years. Older people (aged 50+) constitute almost one-half of the adult (aged 20+) population of developed countries, and this proportion will increase to constitute a significant majority by 2040.“That is why, it is mainly in the developed countries that global ageing may have the most pronounced effect on slowing down the transition from religious to secular values or, possibly, even on some increase in religiosity,” said one of the study authors … [Read more...] about Nations become more religious as population ages
Robot monk to spread Buddhist wisdom to the digital generation
In an unexpected synthesis of ancient and modern, a Buddhist temple on the edge of Beijing has developed a robot monk who can chant mantras and and explain basic tenets of faith. At 2ft high, Xian’er is encased in saffron-yellow robes and has a shaved head. Despite spending much of his time closeted in the spiritual calm of Longquan Temple, he wears an expression of permanent surprise. His purpose is to reach out to people who are more connected to their smartphones than their inner being. Xian’er can answer 20 simple questions, displayed on the touch-screen on his chest, about Buddhism and daily life at the 500-year-old temple. Master Xianfian, a (human) monk at Longquan and Xian’er’s creator, said artificial intelligence could be harnessed to spread Buddhist wisdom in China. “Science and Buddhism are not opposing nor contradicting, and can be combined and mutually compatible,” he told Reuters. Buddhism filled a gap in a fast-paced, hi-tech … [Read more...] about Robot monk to spread Buddhist wisdom to the digital generation
