Several hundred tech workers, homeless-service providers, politicians and other San Franciscans gathered Wednesday night with a goal of identifying solutions to one of the city’s most vexing problems: homelessness. The town hall was organized by Greg Gopman, the former CEO of tech company AngelHack who made headlines in December 2013 for a Facebook post deriding homeless people as “degenerates,” likening them to hyenas and saying they shouldn’t be in Mid-Market, where business people work. After being blasted online and in the media, Gopman studied the city’s homelessness problem for a year and organized the town hall meeting to share ideas for solving it. Gopman mostly stayed out of sight Wednesday in the balcony of the Nourse Auditorium, which he rented, while professionals in the homeless-services field took the stage. Rose Broome, who founded HandUp, a charitable giving website that allows donors to contribute to individual homeless people, said … [Read more...] about Ex-tech CEO who blasted ‘degenerates’ hosts S.F. homeless event

Hands On With the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch Controllers
The Oculus Rift has come a long way since its first development kit, and this spring the virtual reality headset will finally be available to the public as a finalized product. The final version of the Rift is similar in design to the Oculus Rift Development Kit and the DK2: a black plastic VR headset that you connect to a computer. This version features its own built-in headphones, which were missing in the earlier versions. The hardware is more powerful and complex than the development kit versions', but the consumer model actually feels a bit lighter on the head. I didn't notice it shifting on my nose or becoming misaligned when I moved my head, which occasionally happened when I was using the development kits. The Touch by Oculus controllers are wireless hand grips equipped with face buttons, triggers, and analog sticks similar to halves of a … [Read more...] about Hands On With the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch Controllers

Photo: Dylan Schwartz/Courtesy of Clockshop The 2017 Whitney Biennial got caught in an almost extinction-level political crosswind. Research and the selection for the show began in 2015 at the height of the Age of Obama, the apotheosis of the granular politics of identity and multiple subjectivities, systemic investigation into socioeconomic structures, biographies and autobiography, the rise of personal trauma narratives, and continual attempts to set historical records straight. This was to be the first biennial in a brand-new, beautiful downtown building dedicated to these progressive truths which the art world holds to be self-evident (and which Michelle Obama, in fact, had helped inaugurate). Half of the show is women and people of color; there are no art stars or heavy footprints of mega-galleries or the market. The arc of … [Read more...] about The 2017 Whitney Biennial Is the Most Politically Charged in Decades
