Legal fees are a barrier to justice for sex abuse victims, inquiry hears
Victims of abuse are finding it increasingly difficult to bring claims for compensation to court because of cuts to legal aid and high legal fees, the inquiry into child sexual abuse has heard. In its first public seminar, the independent inquiry chaired by Prof Alexis Jay was also told that proposals to introduce a fixed costs regime could add a further barrier to justice. Luke Daniels, a solicitor with the firm Irwin Mitchell, said it now costs £10,000 to issue a claim. Some cases were later dropped because the costs involved were deemed by the Legal Aid Agency to be disproportionate to any likely future award. Peter Garsden, a solicitor with Simpson Millar and president of the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers, said legal aid had been cut back heavily. “People who go through abuse cases are generally unable to work,” he said, “and from the lower income thresholds. “There’s a poverty gap where you can’t afford civil litigation but … [Read more...] about Legal fees are a barrier to justice for sex abuse victims, inquiry hears
Why Taylor Swift Really Scares Trump On LGBTQ Rights
More than any politician—or any other pop star—Taylor Swift has struck fear in the hearts of the enemies of LGBTQ equality. Democratic candidates running for president have strongly denounced the White House’s opposition to the Equality Act, for example, the broad anti-discrimination bill that would protect LGBTQ people federally. It was passed by the House earlier this year but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t allow a vote in the Senate. Beyond the White House’s initial opposition statement to the bill back in May, however, Democrats’ demands have been largely ignored. But when Swift called out the Trump administration at the MTV Video Music Awards last Monday night, accepting the award for Video of the Year for her queer anthem, “You Need To Calm Down,” and asking the White House to respond to a petition she’d promoted supporting the Equality Act, the response came less than 24 hours later. The White House’s … [Read more...] about Why Taylor Swift Really Scares Trump On LGBTQ Rights
China’s reform process and internationalization: The case of ChemChina
Chinese “go global” policy is reshaping the worldwide economy. The international activities of China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) can be perhaps taken as the best example. In particular, ChemChina international mergers and acquisitions faced numerous difficulties such as local worries and concerns. Has China overcome these concerns by paying special attention to local and international stakeholders? For example, while Pirelli acquisition represented one of the biggest deals in Europe and the largest in Italy, many voices were raised claiming the dangers of handing over national assets to Chinese owners. Although some risks were flagged, I think ChemChina business model and corporate governance setting may represent a win-win situation, i.e. good for both the buyer and the target, and also benefit other stakeholders. It can be perhaps called a new-transnational model. One of the achievements in fact has been, so far, to increase both efficiency and effectiveness … [Read more...] about China’s reform process and internationalization: The case of ChemChina

The mass graves of Kashmir
One sodden evening in April 2010, an Indian army major from the 4 Rajputana Rifles arrived at a remote police post where the mountains gather in a half-hitch around Kashmir, India's northernmost state. Major Opinder Singh "seemed in a hurry", a duty policeman recalled. Up in the heights of the Pir Panjal range, down through which the major had descended, it was snowing and his boots let in water. "The officer reported that the previous night his men had killed three Pakistani terrorists who had crossed over into our Machil sector," the policeman recalled. "Where are the bodies?" the policeman had asked, filling in a First Information Report that started a criminal enquiry. "They were buried where they were shot," the major retorted, before taking off in his jeep. "It was not unusual," the policeman later told investigators, when questioned as to why he had not insisted on viewing the corpses or checking the identities. Kashmir had been in turmoil since Partition in 1947 and … [Read more...] about The mass graves of Kashmir
