Joe Biden has one thing in common with Donald Trump: a campaign promising “restoration” of a lost past, rather than the kind of transformation we need to deal with our current problems—that’s what Harold Meyerson says. Of course the past Biden wants to restore is not the white man’s 1950s, but rather the pre-Trump America of the Clintons and Obama. Harold is Executive Editor of The American Prospect and a regular contributor to the LA Times op-ed page. Also: during the presidential campaign, Donald Trump often talked about an American soldier in Afghanistan who became the longest-held American POW since Vietnam. Trump said he was “a dirty rotten traitor” who should be shot or thrown from a plane. He was talking about Bowe Bergdahl. Michael Ames explains how the Bergdahl story reveals a lot about why the Afghan war has been a disaster. Ames is co-author of the new book, American Cypher: Bowe Bergdahl and the U.S. Tragedy in … [Read more...] about What Joe Biden Has In Common with Donald Trump
Problems with donald trump
On Saturday afternoon, the New York Times revealed a 20-page private letter that President Donald Trump’s lawyers had sent special counsel Robert Mueller in January in which they contended that it was impossible for Trump to commit obstruction of justice because he, as president, has authority over all federal investigations and the power to do whatever he wants with them. The letter is a brazen declaration of executive power, and legal experts immediately challenged its premises and assertions. The missive also raised a possible problem for Donald Trump Jr.: It suggested he had not told Congress the whole truth—and might have even misled the body—regarding the cover story he put out when it was revealed that during the campaign he, Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort had met with a Russian emissary after being told she would share with them dirt on Hillary Clinton, as part of a Kremlin operation to help Trump. At issue is the statement that Trump Jr. … [Read more...] about Why the bombshell Trump letter could be a big problem for Donald Trump Jr.
President George W. Bush showed tremendous class and dignity in addressing the nation after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. President Barack Obama similarly comforted the nation, with his words and demeanor, following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In contrast, President Donald Trump refused to condemn white supremacists, white nationalists and neo-Nazis as responsible for the Charlottesville tragedy, instead equating their actions with the actions of those who protested them. His failure to recognize the moment and speak appropriately is a recurring pattern. Not only does he fail to rise to the occasion, time after time, as a public comforter, but we are subjected to a daily barrage of lies and divisive personal attacks by the man holding the office that should represent our highest ideals. So I find myself asking: “What is wrong with this man – especially compared to other recent presidents and ourselves?” The answer may be both … [Read more...] about Opinion: The problem with Donald Trump
Trump's lies and reversals are not due to mental illness but because he reacts to people and situations in the moment, with no thought of future or past. When I saw CNN’s Jake Tapper suddenly blurt out, “What the hell is going on?” in an online video the other day, I thought I’d better speak up. Like millions of people around the world, Tapper has become increasingly baffled by President Donald Trump’s odd behaviors: sucking up to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, then rewriting his own words the next day; scolding British Prime Minister Theresa May in an interview in The Sun, then denying that he ever did so when he was in May’s presence hours later; lying, reversing himself, lying again, then lying about the lies. Come up with your own list of peculiar and often contradictory Trump statements — about women, the Access Hollywood tape, immigrants, Charlottesville, gun rights, you name it. The bottom line, more … [Read more...] about What’s going on with Donald Trump? Psychologist explains the president’s lies, reversals
(CNN)On Wednesday, while the political world was focused on the news that former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen had been sentenced to three years in prison for a variety of crimes, something else of potentially huge import got somewhat glossed over: American Media Inc., the parent company of the National Enquirer, admitted it had helped facilitate a hush payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal and agreed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation being run by the Southern District of New York. That is a VERY big deal for two major reasons. First, AMI admitted that, in coordination with Trump's presidential campaign, it had paid McDougal $150,000 in the run-up to the election for the exclusive rights to her story that she had an affair with Donald Trump a decade earlier. Here's the exact wording from the SDNY press release on Wednesday (bolding is mine): "AMI admitted that it made the $150,000 payment in concert with a candidate's presidential campaign, and in order to … [Read more...] about Why the National Enquirer cooperation deal is a VERY big problem for Donald Trump
