Don’t Tell Hillary Clinton About Any Surprise Parties

October 1, 2007 by

Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons, remarkably dry after Hillary Clinton almost pissed on their parade.Photo: WireImage It seems that a certain potential future leader of the free world can’t keep a secret. In a continuation of their very Demi Moore–Bruce Willis split, Kimora Lee Simmons planned a surprise 50th-birthday party for her hip-hop-mogul ex, Russell Simmons, at Gustavino’s last night. How Kimora expected to keep the party under wraps (especially when she’d invited the press) we have no clue. But Russell was in the dark, we hear, until Saturday night, when Hillary Clinton almost blew it. “I was at the Black Caucus sitting next to Hillary Clinton, and she said, ‘I can’t make your birthday party,’” says Russell. Kimora tells us that the senator was genuinely upset and that her staff had simply neglected to tell her the party was a surprise (which we’re sure bodes well for the next time she’s having tea with … [Read more...] about Don’t Tell Hillary Clinton About Any Surprise Parties

Brexit party activist says he obtained Kim Darroch cables

July 21, 2019 by

New questions have emerged over leaks of confidential UK diplomatic cables criticising Donald Trump after a 19-year-old Brexit activist was revealed to be the person who obtained them. In a lengthy feature in the Mail on Sunday, Steven Edginton, who describes himself as a freelance journalist and who since April has worked for the Brexit party, said he was passed Sir Kim Darroch’s briefings on the White House. The messages, sent from the Washington embassy to the Foreign Office, described Trump’s administration as “inept” and “utterly dysfunctional”. Darroch resigned from his post after the president tweeted his fury at the comments, labelling Darroch a “pompous fool”. Foreign Office veterans, however, defended the ambassador’s cables as nothing more than the type of frank talk expected of diplomats. Scotland Yard has launched an investigation into the leak to the Mail on Sunday and at one stage suggested editors could be prosecuted … [Read more...] about Brexit party activist says he obtained Kim Darroch cables

David Runciman on Brexit and the Crisis in Britain’s Labour Party

February 25, 2019 by

Last Monday, seven members of the Labour Party resigned over concerns about Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. They will remain in Parliament as independents. (Two more members resigned from the Labour Party later in the week.) Their decision was sparked by Corbyn’s unwillingness to come out strongly against Brexit, and in favor of a second referendum, which they hope might reverse the 2016 vote. (Shortly after this interview was posted, the Labour Party released a statement that it intends to move forward with a second referendum if the government’s Brexit motion does not meet certain demands.) They also claimed that Corbyn has tolerated rising anti-Semitism in the Labour Party; one of the departing members, Luciana Berger, has received a great deal of anti-Semitic abuse. How significant are their departures, and where does this leave the Labour Party on the eve of Britain’s scheduled departure from Europe, on March 29th? To talk about these questions, I spoke by … [Read more...] about David Runciman on Brexit and the Crisis in Britain’s Labour Party

‘NI-GEL!’ Brexit party event offers terrifying glimpse of our possible future

May 13, 2019 by

“NI-GEL, NI-GEL.” The Tories have buried their heads in the sand, trying to pretend the European elections aren’t really happening next week. Labour has only a slightly firmer grip on reality. Just make it go away. Don’t mention the war. Nigel Farage has never found a political vacuum he wasn’t desperate to fill. A voice for any spare, free-floating grievance. The establishment man for the anti-establishment. And at the Featherstone working men’s club, he is made to feel right at home. This part of Yorkshire voted nearly 70% to leave the EU and it had been standing-room only long before the Brexit party leader had made his appearance on stage to a saviour’s welcome. “NI-GEL, NI-GEL.” These days, Farage is being kept on a strict leash by the Brexit party chairman, Richard Tice. Nothing is being left to chance. Even the seemingly unscripted moments are tightly rehearsed. And it was Tice, part millionaire wheeler-dealer, part faux … [Read more...] about ‘NI-GEL!’ Brexit party event offers terrifying glimpse of our possible future
