The campaign was launched on Sunday by Air Force veteran Brian Kolfage (above) The crowdfunding campaign to build a wall on the southern border surpassed the $7million mark by Thursday afternoon after the triple-amputee organizer Brian Kolfage pushed efforts. His fundraising mission started accepting checks four days after it first launched, following a notice earlier that day telling those who wanted to donate that a PO Box would be available to send in contributions. Kolfage's GoFundMe didn't reflect the numbers for those who planned on sending in their donations. Adamant not to hinder the amount of money received he warned page visitors not to make donations in celebrity or politician names because they would be refunded. The total had more than quadrupled in less than 24 hours by late Thursday morning when it hit $4million. The increase in funds was vast considering the campaign only raised $800,000 in the first three days. Day four saw more than 100,000 Americans rush to hand … [Read more...] about GoFundMe campaign to build Trump’s wall soars to more than $7MILLION in just four days after triple-amputee veteran ramps up campaign for $1billion

Members of a group of Honduran migrants, which included a mother who had been photographed running with her daughters from tear gas several weeks ago, began seeking asylum at the US border with Mexico on Monday, according to a Reuters witness and lawyers for the group. The group comprised mostly teens but also included Maria Meza and her children, the lawyers said. The family appeared in a widely circulated photograph taken by Reuters as they fled tear gas thrown by US authorities during a protest at the border last month when some migrants rushed the US fence. Sandra Cordero, from advocacy group Families Belong Together, which accompanied the migrants, said eight unaccompanied minors were being processed for asylum. Meza and her family were also being processed, Cordero said. Maria Meza and her children, a migrant family, part of a caravan of thousands traveling from Central America en route to the United States, run away from tear gas in front of the border wall … [Read more...] about Honduran migrant mother and three daughters seen in iconic photo fleeing tear gas at US border now legally ALLOWED into country
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s threat to use emergency powers to fund a border wall would open the door to a future Democratic president using the same authority to declare a national emergency on climate change, members of Congress in both parties say.If Trump decides to declare a national emergency now, it would “open the door very wide” to future declarations on climate change by a Democratic president, Rep. Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from Oregon, told BuzzFeed News. Unlike building a wall, “climate change is a real emergency,” DeFazio said.DeFazio wasn’t the only member of Congress to consider that likelihood.“If Trump can use a legislative stalemate to declare an emergency to divert military dollars to build a border wall… What stops a Democratic President from declaring a climate change emergency and using military dollars to build solar farms and wind turbines?” Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, … [Read more...] about If The Wall Is A National Emergency, Then What About Climate Change?

Pakistan's tribal region is undertaking its first-ever democratic election on Saturday, with newly formed districts sending representatives to a provincial assembly for the first time. This loosely organized region onPakistan's northwest frontier with Afghanistanwas formerly called the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA). This rural mountainous area has long been seen by Washington and the West as a launching pad into Afghanistan for Islamist insurgents. In May 2018, the districts in FATA were merged into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, ending 150 years of draconian colonial-era governance under a system called "frontier crimes regulation." Now there is hope that bringing these areas into a democratic political process will promote stability. However, the tribal region, home to 6 million people, has always ruled by tribal law, with councils of tribal elders holding the real political power. Whether elected representatives can merge democratic governance with traditional social … [Read more...] about Will democracy take hold in Pakistan’s restive tribal areas?
