Review seminar held to protect, study constitution (23-03-2005) NGHE AN — A National Assembly Standing Committee commission held a seminar yesterday in Vinh City to review the country’s efforts in recent years to protect and abide by Viet Nam’s constitution. In addition to reviewing Viet Nam’s performance, the seminar participants also drew on experiences from other countries to draw proposals for the protection of the constitution for a socialist nation governed by law. Speaking at the seminar, NA Deputy Chairman Nguyen Van Yeu emphasised that enforcing the constitution to ensure its supreme role in the legal system was necessary to protect one of the basic principles of a socialist Viet Nam governed by the law of the people, for the people and by the people. Cambodian constitutional experts brush up on legalese (02-03-2007) HA NOI — A delegation from the Cambodian Constitutional Council was in Viet Nam this week to brush up on their legal expertise. Nguyen Van Yeu, deputy chairman of the National Assembly, welcomed the delegation yesterday in the capital. The council’s goal is to learn how to clarify legal documents, organise and solve disputes regarding elections and fight government corruption, said group leader and council president Bin Chhin. Yeu said the sessions would boost relations between the two nations. The delegation would like to strengthen information sharing practices between the council and Vietnamese legal agencies concerning constitutional protection, creating laws and legislative feasibility, said Bin. State secret protection law discussed at NA meeting

According to the Minister of Public Security, Senior Lieutenant General Tô Lâm, 840 cases of illegal revealing State secrets – including confidential documents regarding Party, State, and Government policies and direction for handling foreign affairs – have been discovered since 2001. The leaks were blamed on a lack of consistency in State secret protection laws and a lack of effective handling mechanisms and strong deterrents, hence the need for a law on State secrets protection. The revised Law on Child Protection, Care and Education will be voted on this Tuesday, during the ongoing final meeting of the 13th National Assembly. Much attention has been focused on raising the legal age of a child in Việt Nam from 16 to 18. Việt Nam News spoke to child specialists about this issue. Youssouf Abdel-Jelil, UNICEF Representative to Việt Nam A child is any person under 18 years of age. This is the definition given by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). It’s also the definition agreed by all but a handful of States in the world. Việt Nam is a pioneer globally in upholding child rights. Vietnamese global leadership on child rights was reaffirmed with Directive No 20, issued by the Politburo of the Central Committee in 2012, which strengthened care, education, and protection of children. Quang, who is a Politburo member and Minister of Public Security, was born on October 12, 1956, and currently serves as a deputy of the 13th parliament. Among the 481 valid votes, 452 (or 91.5 per cent of the total 494 NA deputies) elected him as the President. A resolution on the election of the new State leader was also approved by 93.12 per cent of the deputies at the plenary session.
