Picture: Tony Öhberg for Finland Today Katie Melua’s set at the Pori Jazz festival belongs to the most memorable and touching performances. Melua, 33, the Georgian-British singer and songwriter, musically leaning toward folk-pop and blues, walked on the stage wearing a long, pale dress that served as a contrast to her dark appearance from her brown locks to the eyes. She grabbed her guitar and so began “Nine Million Bicycles,” one of her hits from her debut album, Piece by Piece from 2005. After a big applause, she continued with “Crawling Up a Hill,” reminding us of the rat race many are facing in their daily lives, a moment to reflect: work, sleep—and do it all over again. Or as in her words: “My life is just a slow train crawling up a hill.” … [Read more...] about Katie Melua’s Wonderful Performance Takes the Listener On a Deep Journey

If anyone was expecting an upbeat foot stomping night out then they would have been disappointed. But for those who wanted a chilled out evening of beautifully delivered music, then Katie Melua delivered at the Royal Concert Hall last night (December 3). It was an intimate show with amazing vocals and the audience lapped up every minute. The opener, a solo rendition of If You Are So Beautiful, sang in the Georgian's native tongue, was mesmerising. As she was joined on stage by her brother and fellow guitarist for Plane Song, the evening gathered momentum. Even more so when her band appeared for a lovely version of Belfast. Nine Million Bicycles evoked the kind of captivated hush usually reserved for a church. Then it was a cover of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven. The Gori Women’s Choir added another dimension to a five song segment that was just wonderful, in particular Joni Mitchell’s River. The first set was brought to a close with a cover of Shirley Bassey’s … [Read more...] about Katie Melua mesmerises at the Royal Concert Hall
