Young South Koreans make a beeline for Vietnam as jobs dry up at home

June 11, 2019 by

"In South Korea, I can only look for jobs without much prestige, like a photocopy guy. So I decided to come to Vietnam and gain some work experience," Choi Chang-min, a 31-year-old South Korean man, told VnExpress. Choi has two bachelor’s degrees in international trade and finance and currently works as an executive assistant for a Korean company producing fashion garments for export in the northern province of Hung Yen, 54 km south of Hanoi. His main task is to make production plans and manage inventory. Choi is among 400 South Koreans who’ve moved to Vietnam to work under a program called K-Move, launched by the South Korean government to connect young Koreans to "quality jobs" in 70 countries. K-Move found overseas jobs for 5,783 graduates last year, more than triple the number in 2013, when it was first launched, Reuters reported. The unprecedented paucity of jobs at home has seen many young South Koreans, who account for about a fifth of the 51 … [Read more...] about Young South Koreans make a beeline for Vietnam as jobs dry up at home

April 8, 2019 by

The volume of pig, chicken and pork imports has soared recently. Buyers and sellers conduct transactions easily online. This has raised tlconcern that Vietnam may become a dumping ground for refused meat with no clear origin. The Lang Son provincial Market Control Department some days ago discovered 720 kilograms of pig brisket which had a bad odor carried by a truck.  Dieu Huyen, a housewife in Tan Phu district in HCMC, said she usually buys imported meat from supermarkets, meat shops or orders meat online. She always carefully reads the information on the packing, but feels insecure about the products, because they don’t show details about the origin of products. Vietnam Airports Corporation facing risks in airport venture

December 12, 2019 by

International financiers may have no room to join Long Thanh International Airport project, with the lack of a government loan guarantee creating a major obstacle for would-be investor Airports Corporation of Vietnam to ensure bankability. The National Assembly (NA) has issued a resolution on a feasibility study for the first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport project, in which the government will offer no loan guarantee and the selected investor will instead have to manage the fund itself. The move is seen as a blow for interested lenders, often requiring such a government guarantee for initiatives of this magnitude. Vietnam has recently been working with Sweden on the possibility of mobilising a $1 billion loan from the Scandinavian country in order to invest in Long Thanh International, along with air traffic management. Like other groups, the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK) is concerned about the possible risk without a government loan guarantee. India will stand firm on oil and gas cooperation with Vietnam: experts

October 24, 2019 by

India will not reconsider its oil and gas cooperation with Vietnam, said Geeta Kochhar, faculty member of the Center for Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Kochhar made the judgment in the context of China's illegal oil and gas activities in the East Sea, internationally known as the South China Sea, including the deployment of Chinese oil survey vessel Haiyang Dizhi 8 and its escorts to Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. "If China really wants to be assertive of not letting India cooperate with Vietnam, I do not think India would accept that and they should not accept that," Kochhar said Tuesday on the sidelines of a conference on India's relations with neighboring countries held Tuesday in Hanoi by the Vietnam Institute of Indian and Southwest Asian Studies (VIISAS). Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is determined on "not accepting any kind of domination or control by any powers in the region," she said. She added … [Read more...] about India will stand firm on oil and gas cooperation with Vietnam: experts

Karaoke parlor raid nets 96 people using drugs in Vietnam

April 7, 2019 by

They found many plastic bags containing white crystals looking like meth on the tables and floors of the Gossip Karaoke parlor. Over 100 men and women were taken in for questioning and 96 tested positive for banned drugs. The parlor owner, 39-year-old Tran Van Dai, was also in the news last February, when a bar that he owns in the same province was raided and 94 people, including 20 women, tested positive for drug use. Both the karaoke and the bar are locally known as "heavens for players (drug users)" in Ca Mau. Many reports have noted that while heroin has long been common among drug users in Vietnam, the use of synthetic drugs like meth or ecstasy has been rising of late, especially among the partying youth. Last September, seven people died of suspected overdose at a music concert in Hanoi. Last month, a drug bust found 300 kilos of meth in Ho Chi Minh City. The people involved were part of gang that was busted with almost a ton of meth in three different raids. … [Read more...] about Karaoke parlor raid nets 96 people using drugs in Vietnam
