Prime Minister optimistic at conclusion of New York visit (01-10-2007) NEW YORK — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left New York on the evening of September 28 (local time), after attending the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly. Earlier, PM Dung called at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), met with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, worked with the Viet Nam-US Senior Advisory Council on Enhancement of Viet Nam’s Competitiveness, and received leaders from US leading groups. At the NYSE, the government leader witnessed the signing of a co-operation agreement between the NYSE and the Ha Noi Securities Trading Centre in the fields of personnel training, managerial experience exchange and building of trading systems. Dung said he hoped that the NYSE would become a strategic partner of Viet Nam’s stock exchanges, thus helping to develop the Vietnamese financial market and beef up Viet Nam-US economic ties. Speaking at the 11th NA session, the Minister of Planning and Investment (MPI) Vo Hong Phuc affirmed that the new Enterprise Law would continue to nurture, expand and develop the rights and freedoms of the business sector. "The ask-and-give mechanism, unreasonable permits and other inconvenient procedures for enterprises will be removed, and business registration will replace the current licensing regime," Phuc said. UN sanctions must follow international law: Viet Nam (19-10-2006) NEW YORK — Viet Nam has joined other UN members’ in demanding that all sanctions imposed by the UN, are done so in strict accordance with international law, especially the United Nations Charter, and endorsed the UN Secretary-General’s call to assist third states affected by sanctions. Hoang Chi Trung, Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the UN, clarified the country’s stance, at a UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Tuesday, held to hear the report of the Special Committee on the UN Charter and on the strengthening of its role. Trung emphasised that sanctions must be clearly defined, well targeted and imposed in a specific time frame in order to minimise and avoid adverse impacts. Deputy Trần Thị Hiền said it is necessary to distinguish between the amended Laws on Amnesty and the country’s general policies on clemency. She advised amnesty laws should be designed to make sure individuals who are truly deserving are included and short listed for early release.
