Hand-carried good stores on Nguyễn Sơn Street, Hà Nội. — Photo laodong.vn Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — On Nguyễn Sơn Street in Hà Nội’s Long Biên District, there is a small alley which is home to dozens of mini-shops standing close to each other. In each store, there is a variety of goods, including cosmetics, food, beverages, clothes, tooth brushes, cigarettes, glasses, knives, chopsticks and cooking pans. All of them are foreign branded and hand carried to Việt Nam on airlines. For this reason, Alley No 158 is infamously called the “paradise of hand carried goods (HCGs)” in Hà Nội. The goods sold by residents are not low cost compared to Vietnamese products, however, they are cheaper than legally imported products. Being sold at only slightly lower cost than market prices, hand-carried perfumes, cigarettes and wine are the favourite products because legally imported goods often bear high taxes and also, there are many fakes. Nearly 20 years … [Read more...] about Hà Nội street offers tax-free foreign goods

The tourism sector also needs to follow regulations to ensure accessibility for disabled persons.— Photo Vietnam Pictorial HÀ NỘI — When planning trips for business or pleasure, able-bodied people take certain things for granted — they assume that they’ll be able to easily and safely get around their destination, no matter where it is. For disabled people, tourism can require a bit more thinking ahead. Accessible tourism, which attempts to guarantee access to all tourist destinations and services for all people regardless of their disabilities or age, according to the World Tourism Organisation under the United Nations (UNWTO), remains a fairly new concept in Việt Nam but is gradually gaining momentum. Đỗ Cẩm Thơ, deputy head of tourism department under the culture ministry, says in most developed countries, public infrastructure includes features to ensure ease of use for people with disabilities, such as lifts in train platforms, grab rails in bathrooms and auditory … [Read more...] about Increasing participation of the disabled in tourism
