Vũ Văn Kinh, vice secretary of the Party Committee of Móng Cái City, said the model would promote cross-border tourism between Việt Nam and China and boost the development of the two localities. Some 40 tourist cars, of which 20 were from Việt Nam and the rest from China, underwent entrance and exit procedures at the Móng Cái International Border Gate on the first day of the launch (November 9). Head of the province Customs Department Bùi Văn Khắng told Hải Quan ( Customs ) newspaper that smugglers disguised themselves as border residents to carry goods and money between Việt Nam and China. Under current regulations, border residents, defined as Vietnamese citizens with permanent residence in border areas, are exempt from customs duties on goods valued below VNĐ2 million (US$89) per person per day, and on no more than four days a month. Cars driven by Chinese tourists enter Việt Nam through Móng Cái border gate. — Photo dantri.com.vn Viet Nam News QUẢNG NINH — The People’s Committee of northern Quảng Ninh Province has allowed cars driven by Chinese nationals to enter Hạ Long City through Móng Cái border gate for tourism purposes. The entry of Chinese cars will be allowed on a trial basis until December 31 this year, Vũ Văn Hợp, Chief of the Secretariat of the provincial People’s Committee, told the Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. Since January 1, 2017, the province has only allowed cars with less than nine seats owned by Chinese nationals and enterprises to enter Móng Cái City and vice versa during a trial period of one year. Chinese tourists are not allowed to stay beyond three days per entrance. In case of accidents or broken-down cars, the stay is extended by another day. Police arrest trans-national drug trafficking gang in raid (31-10-2005) HA NOI — Police have arrested a trans-national drug trafficking gang, seizing 74 cakes of heroin and more than 4,000 tablets of Methamphetamine, the largest drug haul since the beginning of this year. However, the offenders confessed that they had smuggled 160 cakes of heroin and 202,500 tablets of Methamphetamine from Laos through the Lao Bao border gate, central Quang Tri Province, to Viet Nam and then to the Mong Cai border gate between Viet Nam and China in northeastern Quang Ninh Province. Police bust five drug gangs (04-06-2008) HA NOI — Police seized about 300g of heroin and 12,000 ecstasy tablets in five separate incidents in Ha Tinh and Son La provinces on Sunday and Monday. Police in the district of Moc Chau, Son La Province, seized the heroin, worth nearly US$70,000, as well as a gun and a knife in three raids on drug traffickers on Sunday. The following day, soldiers working at Cau Treo Border Gate in the central Ha Tinh Province arrested two trafficking gangs and seized 12,000 ecstasy pills. Vo Trong Hai, chief of the Cau Treo International Border Gate’s station, said there had been dozens of similar cases in the area since the beginning of the year. Police said they were hampered in their work by the hilly terrain and the ability of drug traffickers to elude detection. Vietnam has reported 334 patients so far - PHOTO: VNA HCMC - A man returning from China via Mong Cai border gate in Quang Ninh Province was confirmed positive for the coronavirus today, June 13, raising the country’s active cases to 11. The 29-year-old man, the 334th case in the country, is from HCMC’s Binh Tan District. He went to China on January 14 and was stuck there for five months due to travel restrictions. On May 31, when lockdown measures have been relaxed, he flew from China’s Hubei Province to Nanning and then entered Vietnam via Mong Cai in the northern province of Quang Ninh. He was taken to a centralized quarantine area in Mong Cai. His first Covid-19 test taken by Quang Ninh’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention on June 3 showed he was negative with Covid-19. Court hands death penalty to drug trafficker from Laos (01-03-2006) QUANG NINH — The People’s Court of Quang Ninh Province handed the death penalty to a Lao citizen for trafficking in heroin and bribery on Monday. Shomphone, 30, was arrested by Vietnamese authorities for trafficking a large amount of drugs from Laos to the country in 2005. Shomphone was caught while smuggling drugs via the Lao Bao border gate in Viet Nam’s central Quang Tri Province to Mong Cai District, Quang Ninh Province. He was carrying 74 bars of heroin (25.1 kg) and 4,050 amphetamines in his car, and driving without a license, when Quang Ninh police apprehended him last April. Shomphone then entrusted three Vietnamese, Nguyen Van Quang, Pham Thi Mai from Hai Phong City and Nguyen Hoang Duong of Ha Long City, to bribe the police and retrieve the car. Some 400,000 tourists taking zero-dong tours visit the country through the border gate every year, according to Quang Ninh’s Department of Tourism – PHOTO: VGP HCMC – The Taxation Department in the northern province of Quang Ninh found that 32 retail shops belonging to zero-dong tours paid a mere VND1.5 billion in taxes in 2017, a modest tax contribution compared to their high volume of sales, Nguoi Lao Dong Online reported. Data from the provincial Department of Tourism showed that around 400,000 tourists opting for zero-dong tours enter Mong Cai international border gate in the province every year. Police net illegal wild-animal smugglers in northern province (30-07-2008) HA NOI — Police uncovered one of the largest wild animal trading rings in the country, finding over 2,600 snakes and tortoises, in the northern province of Quang Ninh. The anti-smuggling department, with environmental police from the Ministry of Public Security, seized a lorry driven by Tran Chau Lan from Nha Trang, in the central province of Khanh Hoa on Friday. Lan was carrying a number of wild animals to export through Mong Cai international border gate. The forces escorted the lorry, with 2,100 snakes and 524 tortoises, from Quang Ninh to Ha Noi on Saturday. The forestry department classified the animals and identified some as belonging to the precious 2B group, based on the Vietnamese Government’s Red List, which bans them from being traded.
