Head of the province Customs Department Bùi Văn Khắng told Hải Quan ( Customs ) newspaper that smugglers disguised themselves as border residents to carry goods and money between Việt Nam and China. Under current regulations, border residents, defined as Vietnamese citizens with permanent residence in border areas, are exempt from customs duties on goods valued below VNĐ2 million (US$89) per person per day, and on no more than four days a month. Cars driven by Chinese tourists enter Việt Nam through Móng Cái border gate. — Photo dantri.com.vn Viet Nam News QUẢNG NINH — The People’s Committee of northern Quảng Ninh Province has allowed cars driven by Chinese nationals to enter Hạ Long City through Móng Cái border gate for tourism purposes. The entry of Chinese cars will be allowed on a trial basis until December 31 this year, Vũ Văn Hợp, Chief of the Secretariat of the provincial People’s Committee, told the Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. Since January 1, 2017, the province has only allowed cars with less than nine seats owned by Chinese nationals and enterprises to enter Móng Cái City and vice versa during a trial period of one year. Police bust five drug gangs (04-06-2008) HA NOI — Police seized about 300g of heroin and 12,000 ecstasy tablets in five separate incidents in Ha Tinh and Son La provinces on Sunday and Monday. Police in the district of Moc Chau, Son La Province, seized the heroin, worth nearly US$70,000, as well as a gun and a knife in three raids on drug traffickers on Sunday. The following day, soldiers working at Cau Treo Border Gate in the central Ha Tinh Province arrested two trafficking gangs and seized 12,000 ecstasy pills. Vo Trong Hai, chief of the Cau Treo International Border Gate’s station, said there had been dozens of similar cases in the area since the beginning of the year. The 29-year-old man, the 334th case in the country, is from HCMC’s Binh Tan District. He went to China on January 14 and was stuck there for five months due to travel restrictions. On May 31, when lockdown measures have been relaxed, he flew from China’s Hubei Province to Nanning and then entered Vietnam via Mong Cai in the northern province of Quang Ninh. He was taken to a centralized quarantine area in Mong Cai. His first Covid-19 test taken by Quang Ninh’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention on June 3 showed he was negative with Covid-19. Shomphone, 30, was arrested by Vietnamese authorities for trafficking a large amount of drugs from Laos to the country in 2005. Shomphone was caught while smuggling drugs via the Lao Bao border gate in Viet Nam’s central Quang Tri Province to Mong Cai District, Quang Ninh Province. He was carrying 74 bars of heroin (25.1 kg) and 4,050 amphetamines in his car, and driving without a license, when Quang Ninh police apprehended him last April. Shomphone then entrusted three Vietnamese, Nguyen Van Quang, Pham Thi Mai from Hai Phong City and Nguyen Hoang Duong of Ha Long City, to bribe the police and retrieve the car. Police net illegal wild-animal smugglers in northern province (30-07-2008) HA NOI — Police uncovered one of the largest wild animal trading rings in the country, finding over 2,600 snakes and tortoises, in the northern province of Quang Ninh. The anti-smuggling department, with environmental police from the Ministry of Public Security, seized a lorry driven by Tran Chau Lan from Nha Trang, in the central province of Khanh Hoa on Friday. Lan was carrying a number of wild animals to export through Mong Cai international border gate. The forces escorted the lorry, with 2,100 snakes and 524 tortoises, from Quang Ninh to Ha Noi on Saturday. The forestry department classified the animals and identified some as belonging to the precious 2B group, based on the Vietnamese Government’s Red List, which bans them from being traded.
