Recap: Mom Guilt
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend I Will Help You Season 4 Episode 7 Editor’s Rating 4 stars **** «Previous Next» Photo: GREG GAYNE/GREG GAYNE/THE CW As Paula mentioned earlier this season, Rebecca’s list of unfinished business is long, and her mom is near the top. We last saw Naomi a full season’s worth of episodes ago, when she out-and-out drugged a heartbroken Rebecca, culminating in Rebecca’s trying to kill herself on her plane home. Despite all the mishegoss that’s happened since (in Rebecca’s words: “I got a diagnosis, pushed a guy off a roof, and went to jail”), her helicopter parent had hovered offscreen, until now. Tovah Feldshuh is once again a complete delight as Naomi, lending her charm and deft comic timing to a challenging character who could easily be unbearable to watch. In grand Jewish mom tradition, Naomi has already sniffed out all of Rebecca’s misdeeds on her own. But in even grander Jewish mom … [Read more...] about Recap: Mom Guilt

Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), demonstrating how not to behave in the office on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Photo: Eric Liebowitz/Netflix In recent months, the #MeToo movement has played a prominent role in a handful of TV shows. Due to a brilliantly timed coincidence, the since canceled Great News took a gender-flipped look at the notion of office harassment mere days after the Harvey Weinstein scandal first broke. The attorneys of The Good Fight contended with a Hollywood sexual-harassment-related lawsuit in an episode that aired in April. Silicon Valley shone a light on start-up-culture horndogs in season five via a story line about the robot Fiona — obviously inspired by the very real Sophia — who realizes she’s been abused by the man who created her. Even the second season of 13 Reasons Why, which deals extensively with rape and assault, highlights the fact that most women have their own #MeToo stories to share. But in the coming weeks, even more scripted series … [Read more...] about 2018 Is the Summer of #MeToo TV

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Kimmy Finds a Liar! Season 4 Episode 10 Editor’s Rating 4 stars **** «Previous Next» Photo: Eric Liebowitz/Netflix The question at the heart of Kimmy Schmidt has always been whether people can eventually recover from trauma and move on with their lives —and its answer has mostly been yes. But that tends to surface another question: Can the people who perpetuate the trauma ever change? To that, the show has mostly said no. The Reverend will always be an unrepentant grifter; Kimmy’s mom will always be selfish. Perhaps in awareness of that ultimate message, this antepenultimate episode takes a softer tack, suggesting that cruel and horrible people can change if they really want to. One of those people is Bobby Moynihan’s Fran Dodd, the obnoxious men’s rights activist who defamed Kimmy in the “Party Monster” documentary. While shoplifting books to burn at a rally (“Nancy Drew doing the work … [Read more...] about Recap: Nevada Pizza

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Kimmy Gets Rich! Season 4 Episode 11 Editor’s Rating 5 stars ***** «Previous Next» Photo: Eric Liebowitz/Netflix Perhaps unsurprisingly for a show with a heavily female cast and crew, a lot of Kimmy Schmidt is about coping with gatekeepers. Rich Upper East Side moms, sneering MRAs, bad boyfriends, worse husbands, snarky co-eds, the hydra-headed rejection machine that is the entertainment industry — Kimmy and friends hear a lot of “no’s,” and usually, their only fallback is to endure them with equanimity. “Broke and unappreciated” isn’t the bottom these characters have started from, it’s the water they swim in. The prospect of Kimmy becoming an overnight millionaire seems poised to change all that. But just as the previous episode softened the show’s hard stance on whether abusers can become better people, this one suggests that the tugboat crew can only move forward when it … [Read more...] about Recap: Ill-Gotten Gains

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Kimmy Says Bye! Season 4 Episode 12 Editor’s Rating 4 stars **** «Previous Next Photo: Netflix After four seasons on the razor’s edge of poverty, the series finale finally pushes Kimmy, Titus, and Lillian into homelessness. Lillian’s tugboat/house has been seized by the city to be razed, the final throe of gentrification in East Dogmouth. And though Kimmy dutifully searches the paper for talent shows “with prizes of at least $3 million” to bring it up to code, it’s clear that their home is gone forever. Surprisingly, Lillian, who’s lived there for four decades, is the most okay with it. She tells Kimmy that it’s a sign to move on, and that she plans to become a “New York legend … all the papers are going to want a picture of me soon, to see what I looked like before I blew up!” What Kimmy doesn’t understand is that Lillian plans to literally blow herself up with the … [Read more...] about Series Finale Recap: The End, Dammit
