Experts urge action to end mass fish kills
HA NOI (VNS) — Massive fish die-offs in many regions across the country recently have raised a big question about how local authorities should mitigate water pollution in aquaculture breeding areas. Last month, more than 1,000 tonnes of fish raised in cages along the Cai Vung River in the southern provinces of An Giang and Dong Thap reportedly died off. After that, more than 20 households along La Nga River of the southern Dong Nai Province suffered losses of more than 20 tonnes of fish. The total loss was estimated to be dozens of billions of dong. In the middle of last year, fish reportedly died en masse at least three times in the Cha Va River in the southern Ba Ria Vung Tau Province. Wastewater from a nearby aquatic product processing factory was to blame. Around 350 of the 1,000 tonnes of fish that were being bred in the stretch of Đà River in the northern province of Phú Thọ had died by Saturday, accroding to intitial statistics from Phú Thọ Province’s fishery department. As a result, households in Thanh Thủy and Thanh Sơn districts have incurred losses worth billions of đồng , as per estimates made by the province’s sub-department of fisheries, local media reported. According to a report by the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the fish deaths were suspectedly caused by explosions, but fishing boats were unable to collect them all, leaving the remaining fish to wash ashore, according to the report. The report also gave other causes, including fish dropped from broken nets in a bumper catch. The department said they had sent samples of the dead fish to Huế for testing, and the results are expected to reveal the exact causes of their deaths. Dead fish have reportedly been seen at the lake on Monday morning. The incident was reportedly caused by water released by two flood gates at the Hòa Bình hydropower plant early this week after torrential rain in northern areas. According to Thanh Thủy District’s People’s Committee, as of 11am on Thursday, as many as 76 fish cages had been affected. Red rashes and refusal to eat were identified as symptoms before the fish died. Sometimes, the street corner is crowded with cheerful noise and claps when someone has a big catch. Their fishing occurs day and night despite big warning signs nearby saying fishing is banned. Ngô Thị Yến, a resident of Hà Nội’s Tây Hồ District, said that hundreds of residents around West Lake make a living by catching fish. Some even catch up to ten kilograms of fish every day.
