Melania Trump and her son Barron will not be moving into the White House for at least six months, following Donald Trump's inauguration in January. It has been revealed that the future First Lady and her 10-year-old will remain at the family home in New York, to allow Barron to see out the rest of his school year without disruption. Donald, 70, was asked about his relocation plans at the weekend, and confirmed that while he will be immediately settling in to the historic official residence, his 46-year-old wife and youngest child would move "after he's finished with school" next year. First lady Melania Trump called the opioid epidemic the "worst drug crisis in American history" in a rare speech Wednesday at a "town hall" on addiction that featured participants as varied as ex-Fox News star Eric Bolling, Demi Lovato's actress/author mother Dianna Hart and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. But in addition to the serious subject matter of her speech, Trump also disclosed a few rarely shared personal details of her life as first lady, during a post-speech sit-down Q&A with Bolling, whose teenage son died of an accidental drug overdose in 2017. Among other issues, they covered dinners with her husband, her lack of time, her thoughts on mean tweeting, her criticism of the media, and even her much-mocked Christmas decor, which she stoutly defended. "I think they look fantastic," she declared. Bolling asked her how the media has treated her on the opioid issue and whether she gets enough credit for calling attention to it. "I … [Read more...] about First lady Melania Trump calls opioid epidemic ‘worst drug crisis in history’
WASHINGTON (AP) — Melania Trump's cranberry topiary trees may have left some of her critics seeing red, but they turned out to be a Christmas hit — one of several new ideas the Trumps introduced this holiday season. In a four-week stretch of 21 holiday parties, the president also did fewer official photo ops and largely froze out the media. But in time-honored tradition, though, politicos still used the celebrations to squeeze in some last-minute deal-making. Many of the soirees unfolded under the threat of a partial government shutdown that took effect Saturday. A stalemate with Congress over Trump's demand for $5 billion to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border forced the president to delay his plan to shift the merrymaking to his Florida estate on Friday. He remained in Washington while his wife and son, Barron, flew to Palm Beach without him. The red trees featured on a green carpet along the East Wing colonnade turned out to be quite the attraction: Pedestrian traffic … [Read more...] about Melania Trump’s controversial red trees a hit at White House Christmas parties
Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this story misidentified the designer of Melania Trump's pre-inauguration dress worn Thursday night. The gown was designed by Reem Acra. On Friday night, all eyes were on Melania Trump, and which designer the new first lady would choose for her inaugural gown. The answer? The vanilla crepe off-the-shoulder gown with a red silk ribbon at the waist was a collaboration "between herself and Hervé Pierre, former creative director of Carolina Herrera," according to the first lady's office. With her hair styled loose over her shoulders, Melania Trump took center stage with the president for their first dance, as the two swayed to a rendition of Frank Sinatra's My Way. "It looks absolutely amazing on her," said CNN anchor Erin Burnett, noting white is a tough color to pull off. Mid-song, the Trumps broke tradition, and their extended family joined the first couple, dancing behind them. With … [Read more...] about Melania Trump helped design her own inaugural gown
Corrections & clarifications: The original version of this story misstated the marital history of President Ford when noting presidents who had multiple wives. It was his wife, Betty, who was married previously. The historic 2016 presidential election keeps on producing first-ever landmarks, and that includes the next first lady of the United States, Melania Trump. So what kind of FLOTUS will she be? According to first-lady historians, here's a hint: Think Jackie Kennedy, not Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama. "In terms of the evolution of the first lady, I see (Trump) moving us back to the more traditional role," says Jean Wahl Harris, who studies the role of the first lady at the University of Scranton. "A very traditional social hostess is something I think she will be comfortable with." But she will be expected to be front and center, not shy and retiring like Bess Truman in the 1940s. But Trump was hardly on the campaign trail so what's to stop … [Read more...] about What kind of first lady will Melania Trump be?
