Many online graduate programs from the nation’s top universities promise an experience that’s nearly indistinguishable from studying on campus. They offer live seminars taught by tenured professors, close collaboration with talented classmates, and degrees identical to those granted by traditional programs. But in one area, even the best online programs differ drastically from their in-person counterparts: the intensity of the recruitment. Prospective students—many of whom are busy professionals unfamiliar with online education and apt to rely on brand names as heuristics—must often navigate slick, insistent marketing operations run by for-profit third-party companies.I personally experienced this higher-education hard sell last year when, eager to return to school but tethered to home and family, I began researching education degrees I could pursue online. I immediately found several intriguing programs run by prestigious nonprofit universities. There was the … [Read more...] about How They (Online Graduate Programs) Get You

Benjamin Fernandes was confident he and his Seattle-based business partner, Sam Castle, had developed the equivalent of a better mousetrap–in their case, a simple mobile device interface that promised to make digital banking accessible to anyone with a smartphone, even without internet access. And he knew just the place that needed it: Tanzania. For most of the East African country’s 60 million residents, managing or transferring money via a digital device involves using the cumbersome Unstructured Supplementary Service Data system, which Fernandes says requires users to type up to 46 digits into their phone to make one peer-to-peer payment. The interface he and Castle developed can transfer money seven times faster, he says, usually within 10 seconds, after a few simple commands. “We’re a massive country,” says the 26-year-old Fernandes, adding that 70% of his fellow Tanzanians are younger than 24. “Tanzania’s land mass is two and … [Read more...] about Back to Tanzania: FinTech entrepreneur brings digital banking to East Africa
The Disney Princess line of merchandise is one of the amazing business successes of the 21st century. Since the early 2000s, Disney has made billions by catering to girls’ love of their princesses, from Snow White to Pocahontas. However, realizing that princesses might not be the best way to reach boys, Disney acquired Marvel Comics (2009) and, later, Star Wars (2012). Now, they have all their bases covered. Given all the money Disney spent to acquire these male consumers, it’s weird to see how intently executives want to alienate them. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” made just $83 million over the weekend, an absolute a failure by Star Wars standards. Disney publicists will chock it up to competition from “Deadpool 2” or franchise fatigue, but they won’t admit that Social Justice Warrior (SJW) politics are to blame. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has been systematically injecting feminist identity politics into Star Wars to its detriment. She … [Read more...] about SJW Politics Have Handed Star Wars Its First Bomb With ‘Solo’

It is 75 minutes before showtime at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, and the Justin Bieber Watch is in full effect. (OMG!) On the fourth-floor pool deck of the hotel that overlooks the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, a motley collection of MTV marketing partners, entertainment executives, and other shiny Angelenos are enjoying cocktails and squinting at the open-air red carpet. (Any minute now!) MTV has parked a cadre of young fans in bleachers across the street to scream on cue at every celebrity arrival, but in the meantime, they’re baking in the sun. Amid the hubbub are two guys huddled together, drinking Michelobs, unmoved by the glamour around them. After a few polite neck cranes over the rail, Twitter cofounder Evan Williams, flanked by his then-COO Dick Costolo, gives up. “I really can’t see anything,” he says. Williams then looks over at the bleachers, sees one girl literally turning pink before our eyes, and deadpans, “They probably … [Read more...] about I Want My Twitter TV!
